Palermo tours and tickets

Palermo needs little booking, with two exceptions. The Palatine Chapel and the royal apartments sell timed slots in busy months, and the Capuchin Catacombs can queue in summer. Monreale, the markets and the cathedral are easy. Street food tours and day trips are best arranged a day or two ahead.

Book these first

Churches and palaces

The Norman landmarks are the main reason to visit, and a few use timed entry.
  1. Palazzo dei Normanni and the Palatine Chapel

The old royal palace, with the glittering gold mosaics of the Palatine Chapel and the royal apartments. Entry is by timed ticket, and some rooms close on parliament days.

Which to pick. Book a morning slot ahead in busy months. Check which rooms are open on the day, and allow two hours.

  2. Palermo Cathedral

A large cathedral that mixes Norman, Gothic and baroque styles, with royal tombs and a rooftop walk. Parts need a ticket.

Which to pick. Visit in the morning and buy the rooftop add-on if you want the view over the old town.

  3. La Martorana and San Cataldo

Two small Norman churches side by side near Quattro Canti, one with Byzantine mosaics and one with three red domes.

Which to pick. Combine them in one visit on foot. Pay at the door and keep to opening hours, which can change.

  4. Monreale Cathedral

A cathedral just outside the city with a huge cycle of gold mosaics and a cloister of paired columns. Buses run from the center.

Which to pick. Go in the morning and take the bus. A guide explains the mosaics, and the cloister has a separate ticket.

Museums and galleries

The catacombs and the opera house are the two curiosities.
  1. Capuchin Catacombs

A network of underground corridors where thousands of preserved bodies are displayed in clothes. It's a grim, unusual visit, and photography is banned.

Which to pick. Go early to avoid the queue. It is not for everyone, so decide before you buy.

  2. Teatro Massimo

One of the largest opera houses in Europe, with a guided tour of the auditorium, the royal box and the roof terrace.

Which to pick. Join a short tour on a morning without rehearsals, or book a performance ahead if you want to see the hall in use.

Food tours and classes

Palermo's markets and street food are among the best in Italy.
  1. Street food tour

A guided walk through Ballarò, Capo and Vucciria, with stops for panelle, arancine, sfincione and pani ca meusa. It lasts around three hours.

Which to pick. Book a small group and come hungry. Go on your first day to learn what to order.

  2. Market and cooking class

A morning at a market followed by a hands-on class in Sicilian dishes such as caponata or pasta alla Norma.

Which to pick. Choose a small class that visits the market first, so you shop for the ingredients. Check dietary options.

A seaside resort with a long white sand beach and Liberty-style villas, about 30 minutes by bus from the center, with fish restaurants on the front.

Which to pick. Go on a weekday. Rent a sunbed on arrival and eat fish by the sea.

Questions

Booking tours and tickets in Palermo

Do I need to book the Palatine Chapel?

In busy months, yes, since slots are timed and fill. Outside peak weeks you can often buy at the door, but rooms may close on parliament days.

Are the Capuchin Catacombs worth visiting?

They are unusual and striking, but not for everyone. Go early, expect no photography, and think about whether it suits your group.

Is a street food tour worth it?

Yes, for a first-time visitor. A guide explains the dishes and chooses the better stalls. Come hungry and take small notes.

Can I visit Monreale without a tour?

Yes. A bus runs from the center. Buy the cathedral and cloister tickets at the door, and allow two hours.

Is Palermo safe for visitors?

Generally yes, with normal city care. Watch bags in markets and on buses, and avoid empty streets late at night.

What can I leave until I arrive?

The cathedral, the churches, markets and Mondello can be done on the day. Book the Palatine Chapel, the catacombs in summer and food tours first.
