Verona tours and tickets

Verona's one major booking is the Arena, where the summer opera season sells the best seats months ahead. Juliet's House, Castelvecchio and the churches have simple tickets, and a city card covers most of them. Lake Garda and the Valpolicella wine region are easy day trips by train or a guided trip.

Monuments and landmarks

The Roman amphitheater dominates the center, and the old town is walkable.
  1. Verona Arena

A Roman amphitheater that hosts a summer opera season. Visits to the empty arena by day need a ticket, and opera seats range from stone steps to numbered stalls.

Which to pick. Book opera seats months ahead for the best nights, and choose a numbered seat for comfort. By day, buy at the door.

  2. Piazza delle Erbe

The market square on the site of the Roman forum, with frescoed houses, a fountain and the Torre dei Lamberti, which has a lift and a view.

Which to pick. Walk it in the morning, when the market is lively. Climb the tower for the view, with a ticket at the entrance.

  3. Roman Theatre and Ponte Pietra

A Roman theater on the hillside across the river, with a museum, and a Roman bridge that links it to the old town.

Which to pick. Buy the combined ticket at the door. Walk up to the castle for the view at sunset.

Churches and palaces

The medieval and Renaissance buildings are close and cheap to visit.
  1. Juliet's House

A medieval house with a balcony linked in legend to Shakespeare's play, and a courtyard with a statue of Juliet. The courtyard is free, and the house has a ticket.

Which to pick. Enter the courtyard on a weekday morning, before the crowds. Buy the house ticket only if you want the interior.

  3. Basilica of San Zeno

Which to pick. Walk in on the day, and cover your shoulders. A guide is useful for the carved bronze doors and the crypt.

Day trips

Lake Garda and the wine hills are short trips from the city.
  1. Lake Garda

The largest lake in Italy, with towns such as Sirmione and Malcesine, about 30 minutes by train. Ferries link the towns.

Which to pick. Take the train to Peschiera or Desenzano and a ferry from there. Buy a ferry day pass on the spot.

  2. Valpolicella wine region

Hills of vineyards north of the city, known for Amarone and Valpolicella wines. A guided trip with tastings is the easy way to visit.

Which to pick. Book a half-day tour with a driver, because tastings and driving do not mix. Choose a small group.

  3. Mantua

A Renaissance city about an hour away by train, with a ducal palace full of frescoes, three lakes and a lively old center. It is much quieter than Verona in summer.

Which to pick. Go by train and book the Ducal Palace ticket ahead in season, since entry is limited. Allow a full day for the palace and the lakeside.
