Ban Jelačić Square in the center of Zagreb, with the statue and surrounding buildings
Zagreb · Itinerary

3 days in Zagreb with a day in Samobor

Use two city days for different sides of Zagreb, then spend the third in Samobor. The first follows the hilltop lanes; the second links the Lower Town parks with Mirogoj. Keeping Samobor separate avoids squeezing a bus journey between city sights. Swap the days around to suit the weather, putting the town and hill walk on the driest day.

At a glance

Where to stay
Stay Around Ban Jelačić Square for easy access to both halves of the center. Lower Town (Donji Grad) also works well if you prefer flatter streets and a wider choice of rooms.

    Afternoon
Enter the Upper Town through the Stone Gate and continue to St Mark's Church. Visit the Museum of Broken Relationships before walking toward Lotrščak Tower and the nearby terraces for views across the Lower Town.
    Evening
Descend toward Tkalčićeva and choose a dinner terrace. Walk back through the main square afterwards, keeping clear of tram tracks when stopping to look at the surrounding buildings.
    Dinner
Order štrukli at a traditional restaurant, checking whether the kitchen serves a savory or sweet version before choosing.
  2. Day 2: Garden squares and Mirogoj

    Morning
Begin at Tomislav Square and walk north through Strossmayer Square to Zrinjevac. Allow time for benches and side streets, then have lunch in the Lower Town before traveling out to Mirogoj.
    Afternoon
Check the current public transport route to Mirogoj before leaving the center. Allow about an hour for a respectful walk around the cemetery, following accessible paths and observing any barriers around buildings or arcades.
    Evening
Return to the Lower Town and keep the evening unhurried. Choose dinner close to your accommodation, or take a short walk toward the Croatian National Theatre before settling at a cafe.
    Dinner
Choose a restaurant serving home-style Croatian cooking and order a seasonal stew or roast with vegetables.
  3. Day 3: Samobor square, cake and a hill walk

    Morning
Take a bus to Samobor after checking the departure point and return services. Walk from the bus station to Trg kralja Tomislava, then explore the streets beside the Gradna stream before lunch.
    Afternoon
If paths are dry and you have suitable shoes, walk uphill toward the old castle ruins. Otherwise, stay in the center for a longer lunch and a slice of Samobor cream cake.
    Evening
Return to Zagreb with time to spare before your chosen bus. Keep dinner near your accommodation and leave any shopping or packing until after you have checked the next day's travel arrangements.
    Dinner
Have a simple lunch in Samobor and order kremšnita for dessert, then choose a light dinner back in Zagreb.
Tips

Tips for 3 days in Zagreb

  • Check Samobor buses in both directions before leaving Zagreb, especially if traveling at a weekend.
  • Treat Mirogoj as an active cemetery: keep voices low and give funeral groups and mourners space.
  • Carry water for the Samobor hill walk and turn back if the surface becomes slippery or daylight is running short.
Questions

3 days in Zagreb with a day in Samobor

Is Samobor worth including in three days?

Samobor adds a small-town square, cream cake and an optional hill walk without the long road journey required for Plitvice Lakes.

Can I spend all three days in Zagreb?

Yes. Replace Samobor with Maksimir Park and a slower afternoon in Trešnjevka, allowing time for its market and residential streets.

Does this route involve much climbing?

The Upper Town day includes slopes and steps, and the Samobor castle walk climbs uphill. The Lower Town park route is the flatter part.

Should I book a restaurant ahead?

Book ahead if a particular Michelin-listed restaurant matters to your visit, especially for a weekend dinner. Keep other meals flexible around your walks.
