The seaward wall of Diocletian's Palace in Split
Split · Itinerary

2 days in Split with the palace, Marjan and the sea

Keep this short visit close to the old center, with one morning inside the palace and another on Marjan. The route links the Golden Gate, Peristyle and waterfront before heading west through Veli Varoš. Leave the beach until the second afternoon so you have time for both the Roman rooms and the views without crossing town repeatedly.

At a glance

Where to stay
Stay in Inside Diocletian's Palace for the shortest walks between sights. Choose Varoš and Veli Varoš if you prefer stone lanes near the Marjan steps, while still being close enough to return to your room before dinner.

  1. Day 1: Palace gates, underground rooms and the waterfront

    Morning
Start at Gregory of Nin outside the Golden Gate, then walk south through the palace lanes to the Peristyle. Visit the cathedral before the streets become crowded. Check the bell tower's access arrangements before deciding whether to climb.
    Afternoon
Visit the palace cellars, then emerge toward the Riva. Keep the rest of the afternoon flexible for lanes you passed earlier. The palace is a working neighborhood, so step aside for residents and deliveries in the narrow passages.
    Evening
Walk the Riva from its eastern end toward the western waterfront. Return through the palace lanes after dinner, when the change in light makes the Peristyle feel different from your morning visit.
    Dinner
Choose a small old-town restaurant and order grilled fish with seasonal vegetables, asking which fish is available that evening.
  2. Day 2: Marjan views and a sandy afternoon

    Morning
Walk west into Veli Varoš and climb the steps toward Marjan's first viewpoint. Start early in warm weather and carry water. Turn back after the viewpoint if you want to save your legs for the beach.
    Afternoon
Return through the center and continue east past the port toward Bačvice. Spend the afternoon by the shallow sandy bay. Keep your belongings together and allow time to dry off before walking back.
    Evening
Follow the seafront toward Firule for a longer coastal walk, or return directly to the center. Keep this evening near your accommodation if you have an early ferry or airport departure.
    Dinner
Eat at a seaside restaurant around Bačvice or Firule and order grilled squid or a vegetable dish with bread.
Tips

Tips for 2 days in Split

  • Wear shoes with grip for palace paving and the Marjan steps, especially if either surface is wet.
  • Visit Pazar on the first morning if you want picnic supplies, then keep purchases light while exploring the palace.
  • Keep a swim bag separate from your sightseeing bag so the second afternoon needs little preparation.
Questions

2 days in Split with the palace, Marjan and the sea

Can I see Split in two days?

Two days allow time for the palace, a Marjan viewpoint and Bačvice. Keep island trips for a longer stay, since sailing times would take a large share of this visit.

Which day should I climb the bell tower?

Try it during the first morning, alongside the cathedral visit. Check access on the official site and leave room to change plans if the climb feels unsuitable.

Is this itinerary manageable without buses?

The main route works on foot, but it includes steps and a walk east to Bačvice. Use a taxi if heat, luggage or limited mobility makes those sections difficult.

What should I change if it rains?

Spend longer in the palace cellars and consider the Meštrović Gallery after checking its opening hours. Move Marjan and the beach to the drier part of your visit.
