Palermo Cathedral, its dome and clock tower against a blue sky, with palm trees in front

2 days in Palermo for a first visit

Use your first morning for the Palatine Chapel, then follow the old center downhill toward its main squares. The second day gives the markets and the Kalsa more room. This compact route keeps most journeys on foot and leaves Monreale and the beach for another visit, so you can spend time inside the churches rather than rushing between them.

At a glance

Where to stay
Base yourself in Quattro Canti and Via Maqueda for short walks to both days' routes. Choose a room away from the main pedestrian streets if evening noise would disturb your sleep.

  1. Day 1: The royal palace and the cathedral

    Morning
Start at Palazzo dei Normanni with a booked visit to the Palatine Chapel. Check which royal apartments are accessible before entering. Afterwards, walk toward Palermo Cathedral along Via Vittorio Emanuele, leaving time to look back at the palace end of the street.
    Afternoon
Visit the cathedral, choosing the royal tombs or roof terrace according to your interests and mobility. Continue down Via Vittorio Emanuele to Quattro Canti, then turn toward Piazza Pretoria and Piazza Bellini for La Martorana and San Cataldo.
    Evening
Walk along Via Maqueda toward Teatro Massimo. The broad space outside the theater makes a useful pause after the narrow streets. Eat nearby, then return through the center on foot while the main streets still have plenty of people around.
    Dinner
Have dinner at Trattoria Al Ferro di Cavallo. Look for pasta con le sarde on the menu, or ask which Sicilian pasta dishes are available.
  2. Day 2: Ballarò and the streets toward the sea

    Morning
Reach Ballarò in the morning, when food shopping gives the market its purpose. Walk through the stalls around Via Ballarò without trying to cover every lane. Stop for a small savory snack, keeping space for lunch and a slower afternoon.
    Afternoon
Head east into the Kalsa for Palazzo Abatellis. Check the gallery's official opening hours before planning your arrival. After the collection, walk along Via Alloro toward Piazza Marina, using the squares for breaks from the enclosed streets.
    Evening
Continue toward the seafront at Foro Italico for a more open view after two days in the old center. Return to the Kalsa for dinner. Allow extra walking time if you stop around Piazza Marina on the way back.
    Dinner
Try Antica Focacceria San Francesco for a casual dinner. Order panelle or a filled bread roll, checking the fillings before choosing.
Tips

Tips for 2 days in Palermo

  • Check church visiting hours before setting out, since services can interrupt sightseeing and make the order of your first afternoon worth changing.
  • Wear shoes with firm soles for uneven paving, and keep your bag close while moving through the narrower market passages.
  • Pack lightly for the palace visit and check its entry rules before arrival, especially if you are carrying larger bags.
Questions

2 days in Palermo for a first visit

Is two days enough for Palermo?

Two days covers the main churches, the royal palace, one market and part of the Kalsa. Leave Monreale, Cefalù and Mondello for a longer stay.

Can I follow this itinerary on foot?

Most of this route is walkable if you are comfortable with uneven paving and several hours outside. Build in seated breaks and cross busy roads carefully.

Should I visit all three markets?

With two days, concentrate on Ballarò. Visiting several markets would take time from the churches and gallery without adding much variety to this particular route.

Can I include the Capuchin Catacombs?

Yes, but replace the gallery afternoon and allow for travel west of the center. Consider whether the preserved bodies would be suitable for everyone traveling with you.
