2 days in Lake Como with a central lake base

Keep a short visit around the central lake rather than traveling its full length. Spend your first day between Bellagio and Varenna, then choose one western shore villa for the second. This plan works best with two nights beside the central ferry routes. Arrive the evening before if possible, especially when flying into a Milan airport.

3 days 4 days
  1. Day 1: Bellagio lanes and Varenna gardens

    Morning
Start in Bellagio before the main arrival crowds. Walk up Salita Serbelloni, explore the lanes around the Basilica di San Giacomo, then continue to Punta Spartivento. Allow two hours before heading back to the ferry landing.
    Afternoon
Take a ferry to Varenna and follow the lakeside walkway toward the old village. Visit Villa Monastero if its gardens are open, leaving time to sit beside the water before your return crossing.
    Evening
Return to your base before the final useful ferry. In Bellagio, revisit the stepped lanes after the afternoon crowds thin. In Varenna, stay near the waterfront rather than adding another journey.
    Dinner
Choose a lakeside trattoria for dinner and order perch risotto or a seasonal pasta dish.
  2. Day 2: One villa and the western shore

    Morning
Cross to the western shore for Villa Carlotta. Allow two to three hours for the terraced gardens and house, checking which interiors are open. Start early enough to explore without watching the clock for your next boat.
    Afternoon
Continue along Tremezzo's waterfront and pause in Parco Teresio Olivelli. If you want another town, take a suitable boat or bus to Menaggio for its promenade, allowing a generous margin for the return.
    Evening
Keep your final evening in your departure town. If leaving through Varenna, collect your luggage before walking uphill to Varenna-Esino station. Avoid planning a last garden visit between a ferry arrival and a booked train.
    Dinner
Have an early dinner near your luggage collection point, choosing polenta with mushrooms or grilled lake fish.
Tips

Tips for 2 days in Lake Como

  • Check ferry departures in both directions before choosing your villa entry time. Different services do not necessarily call at the same landings.
  • Carry a small overnight bag if possible. Bellagio and Varenna have stepped lanes that make wheeled luggage awkward.
  • Choose Villa Carlotta for this route rather than trying to fit both major villas into one afternoon.
Questions

2 days in Lake Como with a central lake base

Is two days enough for Lake Como?

Two days gives you time for Bellagio, Varenna and one villa if you sleep near the central ferries. Airport journeys can take a substantial part of either day.

Should I stay in Como town for this itinerary?

Como town suits train arrivals, but reaching the central lake adds traveling time. Bellagio or Varenna makes this particular two day route easier.

Can I visit both villas on the second day?

It is possible with suitable transport and entry slots, but it leaves little room for delays. Choose one villa and spend the remaining time along the waterfront.

Does this itinerary work in winter?

You need to adapt it around reduced ferry services and garden closures. Check official opening information before booking, and replace closed gardens with village walks.
