Naples tours and tickets

Naples is mostly walked and eaten, so its bookings are few. Pompeii and Herculaneum are the big ones, with timed entry and a real wait in summer. The Naples Underground and the Cappella Sansevero use small groups and fill a few days ahead. Capri is a ferry day. The old streets, churches and pizza places need nothing at all.

Book these first

Pompeii or Herculaneum tickets
a few days to weeks ahead. Entry numbers are limited in peak season, and the queue at the gate can be long.
Cappella Sansevero
a few days ahead. Timed entry sells out, and the chapel is small.

Museums and galleries

The museums here hold the finds that made the region famous, and they are worth seeing before or after Pompeii.
  1. National Archaeological Museum

One of the great collections of Roman art, with the mosaics and frescoes lifted from Pompeii and the Farnese sculptures. Tickets are sold at the door and online, and audio guides and guided visits exist.

Which to pick. Buy at the door on a weekday and plan two or three hours. A guide is worth it if you visit before Pompeii, because it explains what you will see on site.

  2. Cappella Sansevero

A small chapel with the Veiled Christ and other marble sculptures of startling detail. Entry is by timed ticket and the numbers inside are limited. A visit takes about 40 minutes.

Which to pick. Book a timed slot online, because walk-ups are often turned away. Choose a morning time before the queue builds in the narrow street.

  3. Certosa di San Martino

A former monastery on the hill above the city with a museum of Neapolitan history, a nativity collection and one of the best views over the bay.

Which to pick. Take the funicular up and buy the ticket at the door. A guide is optional, and the terrace view alone is worth the trip on a clear day.

Monuments and landmarks

The old city rewards walking, with a few places that charge entry.
  1. Naples Underground

A guided walk through Greek and Roman cisterns, tunnels and a wartime shelter beneath the old center. Tours run in set slots in several languages and the passages are narrow and cool.

Which to pick. Reserve an English slot ahead, since groups are small. Wear shoes with grip and bring a layer, because the temperature stays low all year.

  2. Castel dell'Ovo

A castle on a small island joined to the shore by a causeway, with free entry to the courtyards and terraces and a view back across the bay to Vesuvius.

Which to pick. Walk out in the late afternoon and stay for sunset. No ticket is needed, and a tour only matters if you want the history of the fortress.

Not needed, entry is freeTours and tickets on Viator
  3. Royal Palace and Plebiscito square

The former royal residence on the city's largest square, with state apartments and a historic library. Tickets are sold at the door and the square is free.

Which to pick. Cross the square first, then decide whether the apartments appeal. A guide helps with the palace history but is not essential.

Guided walks and tours

The old center is dense, and a local guide makes it easier to read.
  1. Spaccanapoli walking tour

A walk along the straight street that cuts the old town in two, past churches, craft workshops, nativity stalls and the pizzerias. Tours last about two hours and are usually small.

Which to pick. Choose a morning walk when the street is lively but not packed. You can also wander alone, so a guide is for the stories, not directions.

  2. Street food and pizza tour

A walking tour with stops for fried pizza, pastries, coffee and a pizza margherita, mixing market streets with famous counters.

Which to pick. Book a lunchtime tour and arrive hungry. Say what you cannot eat in advance, since fried and cheese-heavy dishes are the core.

Day trips

The ruins and the island are the reasons many people come to this city.
  1. Pompeii

The Roman town preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius, with streets, houses, baths and the forum. Entry is by timed ticket in the high season, and guided tours and audio guides are sold. It is large and exposed.

Which to pick. Book a morning slot and bring water and a hat. Take a guide if you want the stories, and allow at least three hours.

  2. Herculaneum

A smaller, better-preserved Roman town beside the volcano, with two-story houses, wooden beams and mosaics. It is quieter than Pompeii and easy to cover in two hours.

Which to pick. Visit it if Pompeii looks too crowded or if time is short. Buy the ticket at the gate or online, and consider an audio guide.

  3. Capri

An island reached by ferry in under an hour, with a harbor, a town on the hill, the gardens of Augustus and boat trips to the Blue Grotto when the sea allows.

Which to pick. Book the ferry ahead in summer and go early. Add a boat tour only in calm weather, and keep the return ferry time in mind.

Questions

Booking tours and tickets in Naples

Do I need to book Pompeii?

In summer and on weekends, yes. A timed ticket bought ahead saves a long wait in the sun. In winter you can usually buy at the gate.

Is Herculaneum better than Pompeii?

It is smaller and better preserved, so it suits a short visit. Pompeii is larger and gives a sense of a full town. Many visitors choose one, and a few do both.

Is the Naples Underground worth it?

Yes, if you like history in a small group. The tour is guided only and the passages are narrow, so skip it if you dislike tight spaces.

Can I do Capri in a day?

Yes, with an early ferry. Check the sea conditions before booking the Blue Grotto boat, since it often closes in rough weather.

Are there free days at the museums?

State museums have a free first Sunday of the month, with long queues. Check the official page for the current rule.

What can wait until I arrive?

Spaccanapoli, the churches, Castel dell'Ovo and the National Archaeological Museum can all be done on the day. Book Pompeii, Cappella Sansevero and the Underground first.
