3 days in Tallinn with time for museums and a sauna

Three days let you separate Tallinn into manageable walks: the medieval center, the palace district and the working waterfront turned museum quarter. Give each a distinct day so you spend less time crossing the city. There is room for a sauna and a second museum, while meals in Telliskivi and Noblessner bring you beyond the main sightseeing lanes.

At a glance

Where to stay
Choose Telliskivi and Balti Jaam if you want market lunches and evening food options near your base. The station side of the Old Town is close enough for an early start on the medieval streets.

  1. Day 1: Lower Town lanes and an afternoon on Toompea

    Morning
Begin at Town Hall Square, then explore Vene and Pikk on foot. Look into side lanes before reaching St Olaf's Church. If the tower is open and narrow stairs suit you, climb it before lunch.
    Afternoon
Follow the outside of the town wall along Müürivahe before heading uphill to Toompea. Give the cathedral and castle surroundings time between the two viewing platforms. Pause for a drink before descending the cobbled streets.
    Evening
Walk through Rotermann to see how converted warehouse streets differ from the medieval center. Return to the Old Town for dinner, keeping the evening close to your base after a day with several climbs.
    Dinner
Book Rataskaevu 16 for dinner. Ask about the current fish dish or choose a vegetable main from the menu.
  2. Day 2: Kadriorg art, gardens and an evening sauna

    Morning
Travel to Kadriorg after breakfast and walk through the park toward Kumu. Spend the morning with the art collection, checking the official site for exhibitions and opening hours before you set out.
    Afternoon
Have lunch in a neighborhood cafe, then return through the park toward Kadriorg Palace. Choose a palace visit or a longer garden walk according to the weather. Leave enough time to return to your accommodation before the evening.
    Evening
Use this evening for a booked sauna session. Check whether towels are provided and read the dress and mixed-use rules beforehand. Keep dinner nearby afterwards rather than planning another journey across town.
    Dinner
Choose a casual restaurant near your accommodation after the sauna. Order a warming soup and rye bread, with a main course if needed.
  3. Day 3: Market breakfast, wooden houses and the harbor

    Morning
Start at Balti Jaam Market for breakfast, then explore Telliskivi's courtyards before walking into Kalamaja. Take your time around the residential streets and avoid photographing directly through the windows of the wooden houses.
    Afternoon
Continue to Seaplane Harbour and allow a substantial visit inside the hangar. Follow the museum with a short waterfront walk toward Noblessner. In poor weather, spend longer inside and shorten the coastal section.
    Evening
Stay in Noblessner for an early dinner and a walk around the harbor. The open water makes this a good contrast to your first evening. Arrange a taxi if you do not want the walk back.
    Dinner
Eat at Lore Bistroo and ask about dishes suitable for sharing. Choose fish or vegetables according to the day's menu.
Tips

Tips for 3 days in Tallinn

  • Put your preferred museum first when checking opening days, then move the neighborhood walks around it.
  • Check St Olaf's tower access separately from church access, as a church visit does not guarantee the climb is available.
  • Leave a gap between a large meal and your sauna session, and follow the venue's guidance on drinking water and breaks.
Questions

3 days in Tallinn with time for museums and a sauna

How is a three day visit different from a weekend?

A third day gives Kadriorg and the harbor separate visits. You can spend longer inside museums and fit in a sauna without squeezing the Old Town into a short walk.

Where should I stay for this route?

Telliskivi and Balti Jaam suit the market and western neighborhood walks. Rotermann Quarter and Viru is another practical base for reaching the Old Town and Kadriorg.

Can I visit a sauna without staying at a spa?

Public sauna venues accept visitors, but arrangements differ. Check booking requirements, towel provision and whether your chosen session is mixed before you arrive.

Is St Olaf's tower suitable for everyone?

The climb uses steep, narrow stairs and is unsuitable if heights or confined steps worry you. Keep the street walk and use Toompea's outdoor viewing platforms instead.
