3 days in Lyon from Roman theaters to the river confluence

Give each day a different part of the city: the western hill and old town, the silk district and northern peninsula, then the Rhône and southern tip. With three days, you can visit the Roman museum as well as a second collection without squeezing both into one afternoon. The final day balances indoor time at Confluences with an easy riverside walk.

At a glance

Where to stay
Choose Bellecour for metro connections and walks toward both rivers. Ainay suits a quieter stay and puts you closer to Perrache for the tram toward the Musée des Confluences.

  1. Day 1: Roman Lyon and the streets below Fourvière

    Morning
Take the Saint-Just funicular to Minimes for the Roman theaters and Lugdunum museum. Explore the outdoor remains before the museum, checking its opening hours first. Allow most of the morning if you enjoy archaeology.
    Afternoon
Walk uphill to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, then take the funicular down to Vieux Lyon. After lunch, explore the cathedral area and the lanes between Rue Saint-Jean and Rue du Bœuf.
    Evening
Cross the Saône by Passerelle du Palais de Justice and walk toward Place des Jacobins. Continue south to Bellecour, keeping dinner nearby so you can finish the first day without another transport connection.
    Dinner
Reserve a bouchon dinner and try quenelle with sauce Nantua. Ask about the day's Lyonnais dishes before choosing a starter.
  2. Day 2: Croix-Rousse, Terreaux and the Saône

    Morning
Start at Croix-Rousse metro station and walk to the Mur des Canuts. Return toward Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse, then take Montée de la Grande-Côte downhill, stopping at the viewpoint before continuing into the lower slopes.
    Afternoon
Visit the Musée des Beaux-Arts after lunch near Terreaux. Leave time for the former abbey's courtyard, then walk past the town hall to the opera. Check exhibition arrangements if a particular show matters to you.
    Evening
Head west to Quai de la Pêcherie and follow the Saône for a short evening walk. Return inland for dinner around Cordeliers, with no need to climb back to Croix-Rousse.
    Dinner
Choose a traditional restaurant near Cordeliers and order a Lyonnaise salad or a seasonal main, leaving room for a praline tart.
  3. Day 3: The park, the Rhône and Confluence

    Morning
Enter Parc de la Tête d'Or from Boulevard des Belges and follow the lake paths. Keep this to a relaxed walk rather than trying to cover every corner, then have lunch in nearby Brotteaux.
    Afternoon
Use public transport to reach the Musée des Confluences and allow about two hours inside. Afterwards, walk toward the meeting of the Rhône and Saône to understand the peninsula's shape from ground level.
    Evening
Return toward Perrache and walk into Ainay around Rue Auguste Comte. The smaller streets make a calmer final evening than another circuit of the main shopping routes.
    Dinner
Book Café Comptoir Abel in Ainay and ask about its Lyonnais specialities, including quenelle if available on the current menu.
Tips

Tips for 3 days in Lyon

  • Keep the Roman museum and theaters together, since returning to Fourvière later would add another climb or funicular journey.
  • The park and Confluence are far apart. Use public transport between them rather than treating the third day as one continuous walk.
  • Check the current exhibition program at both museums and leave enough time for the collection that interests you most.
Questions

3 days in Lyon from Roman theaters to the river confluence

How does a three day visit differ from a weekend?

The extra day allows time for Lugdunum, Parc de la Tête d'Or and Confluence. You can also spend longer over meals without cutting the main old town walk.

Should I visit both major museums?

The Musée des Beaux-Arts and Musée des Confluences cover different subjects. Visit both if you enjoy museums, or replace one with a longer neighborhood walk.

Is this route suitable in rain?

Use the museums for the wettest periods and shorten the park visit. Take the funicular down from Fourvière if the paths feel slippery.

Where should I spend the final evening?

Ainay works well after Confluence because it lies north of Perrache. Its streets around Rue Auguste Comte suit a short walk before dinner.
