Day trips from Lagos

Lagos makes a good base for days out. These are the trips worth the time, with how long each takes, how to get there on your own, and when a tour is the easier choice.

  1. Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente

Treat Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente as two separate stops, with time to travel between them. Start around the fortress and village, then continue to the lighthouse headland when conditions suit. The exposed coast can feel much colder than Lagos, so bring a layer and avoid making sunset your only reason to go.

Car, about 35 to 45 minutes to Sagres

  2. Silves

Silves offers a change from the coast, with a red sandstone castle above streets that climb from the river. Put the uphill sights first, then work down toward lunch and a riverside walk. Driving makes a short visit straightforward, while rail travelers should allow for the station being outside the historic center.

    Car, about 40 minutes

  3. Portimão and Praia da Rocha

Make this a two part outing: Portimão for the riverfront and a fish lunch, then Praia da Rocha for a long beach afternoon. The railway station serves the town rather than the beach, so include an onward journey in your plan. Starting in town also avoids carrying a full beach bag around the streets at the end of the day.

Train, about 20 to 30 minutes to Portimão, plus onward travel

Questions

Day trips from Lagos

What is the best day trip from Lagos?

Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente is the one most visitors choose. Drive west from Lagos toward Sagres, then continue separately to Cabo de São Vicente. Allow extra time for stops and parking. Check the return route before setting out, especially if you expect to leave the headland near dusk.

Can I visit both stops without a car?

Yes, on a tour or with a bus to Sagres and a confirmed onward connection. Check the Cabo de São Vicente section separately rather than assuming every Sagres bus serves it.

Can I walk from Silves station to the castle?

You can plan a walking route, but the station is outside the center and the castle requires an uphill approach. Check the distance and consider a taxi in hot weather.

Does the train stop at Praia da Rocha?

No. Travel to Portimão station, then continue separately to Praia da Rocha. Allow for that extra journey when deciding how much beach time fits before your return train.
