3 days in Dubrovnik with Lokrum and the western harbor
Give the old town a full day, reserve another for Lokrum, and use the third to explore outside the western walls. This plan separates the two main climbs and gives the island enough time for walking as well as swimming. Check the boat forecast early in your stay so that you can swap days if conditions change.
At a glance
- Where to stay
- The old town, inside the walls, puts you close to the old port for Lokrum departures and evening walks. Choose a room near Stradun if reducing stairs matters, and confirm the actual walking approach before booking.

Day 1: Walls, courtyards and the old port
- Morning
- Walk the city walls at opening time, then pause for breakfast near Stradun. Afterwards, visit the Franciscan Monastery near Pile Gate. Its cloister makes a useful change of pace after the exposed wall circuit.
- Afternoon
- Follow Stradun east to the Rector's Palace and spend about an hour inside. Walk on to the old port to locate the Lokrum departure point and check the next day's boat arrangements before returning through the lower lanes.
- Evening
- Explore the streets south of Stradun in the cooler part of the day. Follow lanes toward the seaward wall, accepting that some end in steps or narrow passages. Finish with an unhurried dinner inside the walls.
- Dinner
- Choose a seafood restaurant and order black risotto made with cuttlefish ink. Ask which fish dishes are available that evening.
Day 2: A walking and swimming day on Lokrum
- Morning
- Take a boat from the old port after checking the day's return sailings. On Lokrum, start with the monastery area and shaded paths. Carry drinking water and use the island map to choose a manageable walking circuit.
- Afternoon
- Spend the afternoon beside a designated swimming area, checking the entry and exit before getting into the water. The rocky shore calls for care. Leave enough time to walk back to the landing without rushing.
- Evening
- Return well before the final boat and take a break at your accommodation. Later, walk through Ploče Gate for views back toward the harbor before choosing dinner in the old town or nearby.
- Dinner
- Have grilled squid with vegetables at a seafood restaurant. After an island day, choose somewhere close to your return route.
Day 3: Fort Lovrijenac and the climb above town
- Morning
- Walk from Pile Gate toward Fort Lovrijenac and climb to the fortress. Check how its admission works with your walls ticket before visiting. Spend time looking back across the western harbor toward the city defences.
- Afternoon
- Return toward Pile for lunch, then leave the busiest streets for a rest. If you still want a swim, make a separate outing to Banje rather than trying to combine beach bags with the fortress steps.
- Evening
- Take the cable car to Srđ if the weather is clear and the service is operating. Compare the view with the close perspective from the walls, then descend with time to spare before the final departure.
- Dinner
- Reserve Restaurant Sesame for dinner near the western approach to town, and choose a fish dish from the current menu.
Tips for 3 days in Dubrovnik
- Check any validity limit on your walls ticket before placing Fort Lovrijenac on a different day.
- Give Lokrum its own small bag with swimwear, water, sun protection and shoes suitable for uneven paths.
- Use the island day as your flexible slot. Rough weather may change boat operations even when walking in town remains comfortable.
3 days in Dubrovnik with Lokrum and the western harbor
Is Lokrum worth a full day?
Allow most of a day if you want both walking and swimming. A short visit is possible, but boat connections still take time from your sightseeing.
Can I visit Fort Lovrijenac with my walls ticket?
Fort Lovrijenac is included in the walls ticket. Check the ticket's current validity conditions before assuming you can use it on a later day.
What happens if Lokrum boats do not run?
Swap in the fortress and cable car day if conditions suit. Otherwise, use the Rector's Palace and monastery for an indoor-focused day.
Is this itinerary suitable without swimming?
Yes. Replace the swimming time with shaded walks on Lokrum and a longer lunch. You can also shorten the island visit to suit the return sailings.
