The Prinsengracht canal lined with narrow gabled houses in Amsterdam
Amsterdam · Where to stay

Staying in the Canal Ring

An address on Herengracht, Keizersgracht or Prinsengracht tells you less about convenience than its nearest cross street. The southern stretches put you closer to Museumplein, while the western stretches connect naturally with the Jordaan. Bridges add small detours, so judge walking routes by actual crossings rather than the straight line shown on a map.

Eating

Eating in Canal Ring

The cross streets offer more choice than the long residential canal stretches. Look around Utrechtsestraat for restaurants and small food shops, or the Nine Streets for lunch and coffee. If your room has a kitchen, buy groceries before returning for the evening, as the nearest shop may be several bridges away.

Questions

Staying in the Canal Ring

Do canal houses usually have lifts?

Many older canal buildings have narrow stairs. Check the individual property for a lift, and confirm whether any steps remain between it and your room.

Which canal should I choose?

Choose by the sights and transport stops you will use. A convenient cross street often matters more than choosing between the three main canals.

Can a canal view room be noisy?

Yes. Passing boats, road traffic and nearby venues can carry sound across the water. Ask about glazing and whether your room faces the canal.
