The Prinsengracht canal lined with narrow gabled houses in Amsterdam
Amsterdam · Where to stay

Staying in the Jordaan

The Jordaan changes as you walk from Noordermarkt toward Rozengracht. Around the northern market squares, your morning route can follow Lindengracht and Brouwersgracht; farther south, Elandsgracht gives you a useful shopping street. Courtyard entrances can look inviting, but many belong to residents, so treat open doors as private unless visitor access is clearly indicated.

Our verdict

Narrow lanes, hidden courtyards and neighborhood cafes on the west side of the canals, and a short walk from Centraal.

Good for

  • Couples and anyone who likes small streets
  • Cafes, markets and galleries
  • Quiet nights close to the canals

Think twice if

  • You want a big hotel with a lift
  • You want to be beside the museums
  • You'd rather have a livelier restaurant street
