Old Town houses and the medieval port crane along the Motława river in Gdańsk
Gdańsk · Itinerary

2 days in Gdańsk: the center and its history

Keep this short visit within the center so that travel does not eat into museum time. Spend the first day tracing the merchants' streets from the Golden Gate to the Motława, then use the second for the shipyard and wartime history. Choose one tower climb and leave Westerplatte for a longer stay: adding it here would make an already demanding museum day too rushed.

At a glance

Where to stay
Base yourself in Main Town (Główne Miasto) for short walks back between sights. Old Town (Stare Miasto) works well if you arrive by train and want easy access to the station and the museums north of the center.

  1. Day 1: Merchant streets and the Motława

    Morning
Start at the Golden Gate and follow Długa into the Long Market. Look at the façades before entering Artus Court or Main Town Hall, depending on opening hours. Choose the town hall tower if you want a view without adding another climb later.
    Afternoon
Walk to St Mary's Church, then follow Mariacka Street toward the river. Look closely at the carved drainage spouts beside the raised terraces. Continue along Długie Pobrzeże to the Crane, allowing time to enter its museum if maritime history interests you.
    Evening
Cross to Granary Island for a different view of the waterfront, then walk toward Ołowianka if you still have energy. Keep the evening flexible: the river makes a useful short circuit after dinner without committing to another attraction.
    Dinner
Try Bar Mleczny Neptun for a simple Polish meal. Choose pierogi or soup from the day's menu.
  2. Day 2: The shipyard and wartime history

    Morning
Walk north to the European Solidarity Centre beside the shipyard gate. Allow around two hours for the exhibition, then look at the gate and the Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers outside before heading toward the next museum.
    Afternoon
Give the Museum of the Second World War at least three hours. Have lunch before entering and avoid booking another timed attraction afterwards. The exhibition covers a broad subject, so take breaks rather than trying to hurry through every room.
    Evening
Return through the streets around the Radunia Canal for a quieter walk back toward Main Town. After two substantial museums, use the evening for dinner and a short riverside stroll rather than another history stop.
    Dinner
Choose Pierogarnia Mandu for dinner and order pierogi, checking the menu for the fillings available that evening.
Tips

Tips for 2 days in Gdańsk

  • Check both museums' official opening days before fixing the order. Swap the days if a closure affects your visit.
  • Choose either the town hall tower or St Mary's tower. Doing both uses time better spent inside the museums.
  • Leave a proper lunch gap between the two history museums; their exhibitions require more attention than a quick sightseeing stop.
Questions

2 days in Gdańsk: the center and its history

Can I see Gdańsk in two days?

Two days cover the central streets, waterfront and two major history museums. You will need to leave the beaches, Oliwa and longer trips for another visit.

Should I visit both history museums on the same day?

It works if history is your priority and both are open. Allow around two hours for the European Solidarity Centre and at least three for the wartime museum.

Can I fit Westerplatte into this itinerary?

You could replace one museum with Westerplatte, but adding it to both makes the day rushed. Check seasonal boat departures before choosing that version.

Where should I stay for a short visit?

Main Town keeps the first day's sights close together. Old Town suits rail arrivals and gives a convenient starting point for the second day's museums.
