Luxembourg City tours and tickets

Luxembourg City needs little booking. The Grand Ducal Palace is open for guided visits only in summer, so reserve a few weeks ahead through the tourist office. The Bock Casemates, the museums and the Grund can be done on the day. Public transport is free across the country, which makes Vianden, the Müllerthal and Trier easy to do without a tour.

Monuments and landmarks

The old fortress city has a few sights worth a ticket, and one that needs a reservation.
  1. Bock Casemates

Tunnels cut into the rock of the old fortress, with galleries, chambers and views over the Alzette valley. Entry is by ticket, and a visit takes about an hour. It is open from spring to autumn.

Which to pick. Go on a dry day and take a jacket. Buy at the entrance, and combine it with the Corniche walk.

  2. Grand Ducal Palace

The official residence of the Grand Duke, in the old town. It opens to the public for guided tours in the summer weeks, booked through the tourist office, and tours last about an hour.

Which to pick. Reserve a slot a few weeks ahead for July and August. If you miss out, look at the facade and the guards.

  3. Chemin de la Corniche

A walkway along the old ramparts, called the most beautiful balcony in Europe, above the Grund. It is free and open all year, and a walk takes 20 minutes.

Which to pick. Walk it at sunset or in the morning. No booking is needed, and a guided walk is optional.

Museums and galleries

Two good museums that are quieter than the sights in the old town.
  1. Mudam

The modern art museum, set in a glass and stone building by I. M. Pei on the edge of the Kirchberg district, with changing shows. Tickets are sold at the door and online.

Which to pick. Go on a weekday and check the current exhibitions. Buy at the door, and skip a guided visit unless a show interests you.

  2. National Museum of History and Art

A museum of archaeology, art and history in the old town, with Roman finds, medieval works and modern art. Entry is often free for the permanent collection.

Which to pick. Choose it on a wet afternoon. Check what is free and what needs a ticket.

Guided walks and tours

The city is easy to learn from a guide or a little train.
  1. Old town walking tour

A guided walk through the old quarter, the casemates area and the Corniche, covering the fortress, the dukes and the city's role in the EU. Tours last about two hours.

Which to pick. Join on your first morning. It is a good way to see the key sights in one go.

  2. Pétrusse Express

A small sightseeing train that loops through the old town, the Pétrusse valley and the Kirchberg. A circuit takes about an hour with commentary in several languages.

Which to pick. Take it on a first day if you dislike walking hills. Buy tickets at the stop.

  3. Moselle and Trier

A trip down the Moselle valley with wine villages and a boat, then on to Trier in Germany, with Roman gates and baths. Trains take about 50 minutes to Trier.

Questions

Booking tours and tickets in Luxembourg City

Is public transport really free in Luxembourg?

Yes, buses, trams and second class trains are free across the country, with first class tickets sold separately. You do not need a pass to reach Vianden or Trier.

How do I book the Grand Ducal Palace?

Through the city tourist office, for guided visits in summer. Reserve a few weeks ahead for July and August, and check the tour languages.

Is the Luxembourg Card worth it?

It is worth it if you plan several paid sights, since many are covered. If you stay in the city and see two or three, single tickets cost less.

Are the casemates suitable for children?

Yes, but there are many steps and low passages. Take a jacket, and avoid it with a pushchair. It is a fun hour for older children.

Can I visit Trier in a day?

Yes, by train in under an hour. Trier has the Porta Nigra, the Roman baths and the cathedral, so a day is enough. Carry ID for the journey.

What can wait until I arrive?

The casemates, museums, the Corniche and the Grund can all be done on the day. Book the Grand Ducal Palace and a Friday or Saturday dinner ahead.
