The Plaza Mayor in Madrid, with Philip III on horseback before the painted Casa de la Panadería
Madrid · Itinerary

2 days in Madrid with one major museum

Keep a short Madrid visit to two connected walks: the old center west of Sol, then the museums and park east of it. This plan gives the Royal Palace and Prado separate mornings, leaving room for lunch and time outdoors. Save the other major collections for a longer stay rather than rushing through three museums.

At a glance

Where to stay
Choose Sol and the center for a short walk back after dinner and straightforward access to both days. Ask for a room away from the street if you are sensitive to late evening noise.

Other lengths
3 days 4 days
  1. Day 1: Sol, the palace and La Latina

    Morning
Start at Puerta del Sol and follow Calle Mayor toward Plaza Mayor. Walk through the square's arcades, then continue along Calle Mayor to Plaza de la Villa before your palace visit.
    Afternoon
Allow around ninety minutes inside the Royal Palace, checking for official closures before traveling. Afterwards, walk past Almudena Cathedral and down Calle de Bailén toward the older streets around Plaza de la Paja.
    Evening
Explore La Latina on foot, using Cava Baja as your main street and stepping into the smaller lanes around it. Eat here before returning toward Sol through Plaza Mayor after dark.
    Dinner
Order huevos rotos at Casa Lucio, with a booking if you want a seated dinner rather than a succession of tapas stops.
  2. Day 2: The Prado and a long park walk

    Morning
Take a booked morning slot at the Prado Museum. Choose a few priorities, such as Velázquez and Goya, and allow time to sit rather than trying to cover every gallery.
    Afternoon
Walk uphill along Calle de Felipe IV toward Retiro Park. Enter near Puerta de Felipe IV, then continue toward the lake and Paseo de las Estatuas for a gentle afternoon outdoors.
    Evening
Return through Barrio de las Letras along Calle de las Huertas and Plaza de Santa Ana. If you book a flamenco show, leave enough time for dinner and the walk to the venue.
    Dinner
Choose a neighborhood tapas bar in Huertas and order tortilla, croquetas and a vegetable dish to share after the museum.
Tips

Tips for 2 days in Madrid

  • Book the palace and Prado on different days so a delayed visit does not put a second timed admission at risk.
  • Wear shoes suitable for stone paving and allow a proper lunch break between the palace and the lanes of La Latina.
  • If your first day is Sunday, visit El Rastro early and move the palace visit to a later available slot.
Questions

2 days in Madrid with one major museum

Can I see Madrid's main sights in two days?

Two days allow a useful introduction to the old center, Royal Palace, Prado and Retiro. Choose one main art museum so that the visit still includes time walking through neighborhoods.

Should I include the Reina Sofía?

Swap it for the Prado if modern art interests you more. Combining both with the palace over two days leaves less room for the streets and park.

Do I need public transport for this itinerary?

Most of this route works on foot. Use the Metro when tired or staying farther out, and remember that the walk from the palace to the Prado crosses much of the center.

Can I fit Toledo into two days?

A Toledo trip would take one of your two main sightseeing days. Keep both days in Madrid unless Toledo matters more to you than the palace, museums and neighborhood walks.
