Koules fortress tickets and the route through the fort
Treat the interior and roof as two different parts of your visit. The stone rooms help explain the building's defensive role, while the upper level lets you understand how the entrance to the harbor was controlled. Ask which areas are accessible that day before buying admission. Wind and exposed surfaces can affect the experience more than the short distance from the center suggests.

The best time to visit
Choose a calm day if the upper level is your main interest. Leave enough time before closing to see the interior first, then spend time looking back toward the city from above.
How to get to Koules fortress
From Lions Square, walk downhill along August 25 Street to the old harbor, then follow the waterfront to the fortress approach. Allow roughly 15 minutes. The final approach is on foot, so taxis cannot remove the whole walk.
Tips for your visit
- Ask about upper-level access before purchasing admission if stairs or exposed heights are a concern.
- Keep hats and loose belongings secure when stepping onto exposed sections.
- Look back toward the harbor entrance from the upper level to understand the fortress's position.
Koules fortress tickets and the route through the fort
Does the harbor walk require a fortress ticket?
The outdoor harbor walk is separate from admission to the fortress interior. Follow any barriers or temporary restrictions on the approach.
Can I reach the roof without using stairs?
Do not assume step-free access to the upper level. Ask the fortress about the current route and which areas suit your mobility needs.
Is the fortress a good rainy-day visit?
The interior provides shelter, but the approach and upper level are exposed. In poor weather, check access before setting out.
Can I visit just before closing?
Check the last admission time as well as the closing time. Arriving shortly before closing may leave too little time for both levels.
