Heraklion tours and tickets

Heraklion's big booking is Knossos, which fills from mid-morning in summer, so choose an early slot or a guide. The Archaeological Museum and the Venetian harbor need nothing in advance. Day trips to Phaistos, Spinalonga and the Archanes vineyards run from spring to autumn. A rental car or tour is the way to see the island, and the ferries are best bought early.

Book these first

Knossos timed ticket
a few days to a week ahead in summer. Entry is by timed slot through the official e-ticket system, and the first slot of the day is quieter and cooler.
A rental car for the rest of Crete
2 to 4 weeks ahead from June to September. Automatic cars and the better rates go first, and public buses will not reach most beaches or villages.
Ferries to Santorini or Athens
1 to 3 weeks ahead in summer. Fast boats to Santorini run mainly in summer and fill on weekends. Overnight ferries to Piraeus sell out in August.

Monuments and landmarks

The Minoan palace is the headline, and the Venetian harbor is the walk.
  1. Palace of Knossos

The Bronze Age palace of the Minoans, with restored halls, painted walls and the throne room. Tickets are sold online and at the gate, and many visitors take a guided tour. Queues build from mid-morning in summer.

Which to pick. Arrive at opening, or take a licensed guide who explains the ruins. Buy a combined ticket with the museum if you plan both.

  2. Koules fortress

A Venetian sea fort at the end of the old harbor wall, with a stone walkway and views of the port. Entry is by ticket, and the roof is the draw. Hours are shorter in winter.

Which to pick. Go in the late afternoon. Buy at the gate, and combine it with a harbor walk.

  3. Venetian harbor and walls walk

A guided walk of the harbor, the arsenals, Morosini fountain and Kazantzakis's grave on the bastion. It lasts about two hours and ties the Venetian history together.

Which to pick. Take a walk if you want context. Otherwise the route is easy to follow with a map.

Museums and galleries

The museum next to Knossos is as important as the site, and the city museum is quieter.
  1. Heraklion Archaeological Museum

The finest collection of Minoan art in the world, with the frescoes of Knossos, the Phaistos Disc and the snake goddess figures. Tickets are sold at the door, and a visit takes two hours.

Which to pick. Visit the museum first for context, then Knossos. Buy at the door and take an audio guide if offered.

  2. Historical Museum of Crete

A museum of Cretan history from early Christian times to the twentieth century, with Byzantine icons, Venetian maps and an El Greco painting. It is a good wet-day option.

Which to pick. Choose it if you want the story after the Minoans. Buy at the door, and allow ninety minutes.

Day trips

The island's famous sights are one to two hours from the city, so a tour or a car makes sense.
  1. Phaistos and Matala

A Minoan palace on a ridge in the south, with views over the Messara plain, then the hippie caves and the beach at Matala. The drive takes about an hour to the palace.

Which to pick. Go early to see Phaistos before the heat, and finish with a swim at Matala. A tour is easy if you have no car.

  2. Spinalonga

A Venetian island fortress and former leper colony off the Elounda coast, reached by short boat rides. The trip from Heraklion takes about an hour and a half each way.

Which to pick. Go on a tour that includes transport and the boat, since the drive is long. Wear a hat and take water.

  3. Archanes and the vineyards

A wine village and a mountain landscape about 15 minutes south of the city, with cellars, a Minoan site and tavernas. Tours include tastings and lunch.

Which to pick. Take a half-day wine tour with a driver. It is the easiest way to taste Cretan wines.

Food tours and classes

Cretan food is simple, local and generous, and it is easiest to learn by cooking it.
  1. Cretan cooking class

A half-day class in a village kitchen, making dishes such as dakos, stuffed vegetables and pies with herbs, then eating them together. Many include a visit to a market or garden.

Which to pick. Choose a morning class that ends in lunch. It is a good plan for a day with no sights.

  2. Olive oil and raki tasting

A visit to an olive mill or a family farm to taste oils, cheeses and raki, with a short tour of the groves. Sessions last about two hours.

Which to pick. Join on a half day if you have a car or take a tour with pickup. Ask about the harvest season.

Questions

Booking tours and tickets in Heraklion

Do I need to book Knossos in advance?

In high season, an early slot or a guide helps. Tickets are sold online and at the gate, but queues build from mid-morning, so arrive at opening or choose the late afternoon.

Is a guide worth it at Knossos?

Yes. The site is restored and confusing, and a licensed guide explains the layers. A guide takes about ninety minutes, and you can then wander alone.

Should I rent a car?

For the south coast and Phaistos, a car is the easiest way, and in summer you should book it weeks ahead. For Knossos and the city, buses and taxis are enough.

How do I get to Santorini or Athens?

By ferry or plane. Fast ferries run in summer and sell out, so buy tickets weeks ahead in July and August, and check which port the boat leaves from.

Is Spinalonga a good day trip from Heraklion?

It is a long day, about three hours of travel each way with the boat. Stay in the Elounda area if Spinalonga is your priority.

What can wait until I arrive?

The museum, the harbor, Koules and a market walk can all be done the same day. Book Knossos in summer, a car and day trips a few days ahead.
