Things to do

Things to do in Utrecht

Utrecht is a city to walk. Most of it sits within the canal ring, and the best things to do are the tower, the water and a few good museums.
  1. Dom Tower

The tallest church tower in the Netherlands, climbed by staircase on a guided tour. The view over the red roofs and the canals is the best in the city.

A few days ahead in summer.

  2. Oudegracht wharf cellars

The canal runs below street level, with wharves along the water where old storage cellars now hold cafes and restaurants. Walk down to the water and along it.

  3. Canal boat tour

A one-hour boat on the Oudegracht passes under the low bridges and past the wharf cellars. It is a good first-day orientation.

    A day ahead at weekends.

  4. Domplein and the cathedral

The square where the Roman fort stood, between the tower and the Gothic Dom Church. The church has a quiet cloister garden.

  5. Centraal Museum

Utrecht's city museum, with medieval art, Dutch design and the largest collection of work by Dick Bruna, the creator of Miffy.

  6. Rietveld Schröder House

A 1924 house by Gerrit Rietveld, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a landmark of modern design. It is visited on a guided tour, so choose a slot first.

    1 to 3 weeks ahead.

  7. Museum Speelklok

A museum of mechanical music boxes, street organs and clocks, in a former church. Visits are by guided tour and the staff play the instruments.

  8. Nieuwegracht and Pandhof

The quieter canal east of the Oudegracht, lined with large canal houses, with a small walled garden beside the cathedral.

  9. Railway Museum

The Dutch national railway museum, a good rainy-day choice for families, in an old station on the east side of the city.

  10. Vredenburg market

An open-air market on the square between the station and the old center, with food stalls and a weekly organic market on Fridays.
