Day trips from Turin

Turin makes a good base for days out. These are the trips worth the time, with how long each takes, how to get there on your own, and when a tour is the easier choice.

  1. Reggia di Venaria

Venaria works as a palace outing with an adjustable return time, but the gardens can easily turn a half day into most of a day. Start with the interiors, then decide how far to walk outside according to the weather and your energy. Leave time for the approach through the old town, which makes the visit feel less like a transfer straight to a ticket desk.

Bus, roughly 45 to 60 minutes from central Turin

  2. Langhe and Alba

Decide first whether you want a town day in Alba or a journey through the vineyard hills. Rail works for Alba, but it does not deliver you to scattered wineries and hill villages. For Barolo or Barbaresco as well, use a car with a non-drinking driver or a guided trip. Keep the number of stops small enough to allow lunch and an unhurried visit.

Train, allow roughly 90 minutes to two hours each way

  3. Sacra di San Michele

The main planning decision is how you will cover the climb to the abbey. Driving or a guided trip simplifies the journey, while a train journey still leaves a substantial uphill section unless you arrange a road transfer. Wear shoes suited to steps and uneven surfaces, check the official visitor arrangements and choose clear weather if the valley views matter to you.

Car, about one hour to parking, plus the uphill walk

Questions

Day trips from Turin

What is the best day trip from Turin?

Reggia di Venaria is the one most visitors choose. Check the palace's official transport page for current bus services from Turin and the correct boarding stop. Confirm the return stop before entering the palace, and allow extra time for the walk between the bus and the visitor entrance.

Is a half day enough for Venaria?

A half day can cover selected interiors and a short garden walk. Allow most of a day if you want a slower palace visit, lunch and a longer route outside.

Can I visit the Langhe without a car?

Yes, on a guided trip or with arranged local transport. The train is useful for Alba, but reaching scattered vineyards independently needs more planning than the journey from Turin.

Can I reach the abbey entirely by train?

No. A regional train can cover the valley journey, but the abbey stands above the railway. Arrange onward road transport or plan a substantial uphill walk with appropriate preparation.
