Sofia tours and tickets
Sofia is a compact, low-cost city where most sights are free or cheap, and booking matters little. The main plans are a day trip to Rila Monastery, a visit to Boyana Church, and a walking tour of the center. Food tours are good value, and Plovdiv is easy by train or bus.
Book these first
- Day trip to Rila Monastery
- a week ahead in summer. Group tours fill up in July and August, and a car or a place on a coach is easier to arrange in advance.
- A table for dinner
- a day or two ahead at weekends. The traditional restaurants with live music fill up on Friday and Saturday nights.

Booking tours and tickets in Sofia
Is Sofia worth a guided tour?
For a first visit, a free or low-cost walking tour is a good way to understand the layers of the city.
Do I need to book Rila Monastery?
A guided trip should be booked a few days ahead in summer. If you go by bus, you can decide on the day.
Can I go to Boyana Church without a booking?
Often, but groups are limited in size. In summer, book a slot to avoid a long wait outside the church.
Is it safe to take taxis?
Use official taxis or a booking app, and agree the fare. Trips in the center are short and cheap.
What if it rains?
The National Archaeological Museum, the cathedral crypt, the Serdika ruins and a food tour all work indoors, so you can keep going on a wet day.
What can wait until I arrive?
The cathedral, the Roman ruins, the walking tour and the food scene can be done on the day. Book the Rila trip and Boyana first.
