The old town of Salzburg and the fortress above it, seen across the river
Salzburg · Itinerary

2 days in Salzburg: the old town, fortress and gardens

Use your first day for the lanes and courtyards below the fortress, then cross the river for a different view of the city. On the second day, combine the fortress with a walk across the Mönchsberg. This route keeps travel short and leaves enough time to visit Mozart's Birthplace without rushing between museum rooms and viewpoints.

  1. Day 1: Mozart, cathedral squares and the right bank

    Morning
Start at Mozart's Birthplace on Getreidegasse, checking its official opening time before setting out. Afterwards, walk through the passageways between Getreidegasse and Universitätsplatz, then continue toward Residenzplatz. Allow around two hours for the museum and this short walk.
    Afternoon
Visit Salzburg Cathedral outside service times, then explore St. Peter's cemetery beneath the cliff. Cross the Salzach by Makartsteg and walk through Mirabell Gardens. Looking south along the garden's central axis puts the fortress directly above the old town.
    Evening
Follow Linzer Gasse uphill from the river, then return along Steingasse beneath Kapuzinerberg. These lanes make a useful evening loop without another major attraction. Finish beside the Salzach for the view of the illuminated fortress.
    Dinner
Choose a traditional inn in the old town and order Wiener schnitzel or a mushroom dish, followed by apple strudel.
  2. Day 2: The fortress and Mönchsberg paths

    Morning
Walk to Festungsgasse for the fortress funicular and allow most of the morning for Hohensalzburg. Check which rooms your ticket includes before entering. Visit the outdoor viewpoints as well as the interiors, since the outlook changes around the fortress.
    Afternoon
After descending, walk via Kapitelplatz toward the Mönchsberg lift on Gstättengasse. Take the lift up and follow the signed paths toward Mülln. Allow about two hours with viewpoint stops, and wear shoes with grip if the ground is damp.
    Evening
Finish your hill walk in Mülln, then return toward the center along the river. If you have an early departure, shorten the walk and use the lift back down instead of continuing across the hill.
    Dinner
Eat at Augustiner Bräustübl and choose from the food stalls, looking for roast pork, sausages or a pretzel.
Tips

Tips for 2 days in Salzburg

  • Visit Mozart's Birthplace near opening, then keep the rest of the first morning flexible rather than booking another immediate entry.
  • Use the fortress funicular and Mönchsberg lift as separate journeys; they serve different parts of the hill.
  • Carry a light waterproof layer for the Mönchsberg, where an exposed viewpoint can feel cooler than the streets below.
Questions

2 days in Salzburg: the old town, fortress and gardens

Can I see the main sights in two days?

Yes. Two days allows time for the old town, Mozart's Birthplace, the fortress and Mirabell Gardens. Keep Hellbrunn and longer excursions for another visit if you want time inside the main sights.

Which day should I visit the fortress?

Choose the clearer morning if your plans are flexible. The fortress has indoor rooms, but visibility makes a substantial difference to the mountain views.

Do I need buses for this itinerary?

Most of this route is walkable. The fortress funicular and Mönchsberg lift reduce the climbing, while buses are useful for reaching accommodation farther from the center.

What should I change if it rains?

Spend longer inside Mozart's Birthplace and the fortress, and shorten the Mönchsberg walk. Visit the cathedral outside services and save the garden viewpoints for a clearer spell.
