Day trips from Naples
Naples makes a good base for days out. These are the trips worth the time, with how long each takes, how to get there on your own, and when a tour is the easier choice.
Pompeii
Pompeii rewards a selective route more than an attempt to see every street. Travel to the station beside Porta Marina, start with the Forum and choose a few houses and public buildings from the current opening list. Give the site at least half a day, with longer breaks and a shorter route when the weather is hot.
Train, about 40 minutes, with additional waiting time
Herculaneum
Herculaneum offers a closer look at Roman homes within a smaller area than Pompeii. The approach from Ercolano Scavi station runs downhill through the modern town before reaching the excavation. Allow a few hours for the site, paying attention to surviving upper floors, decoration and household spaces rather than moving quickly from one named building to another.
Train, about 20 minutes, then a 15 to 20 minute walk
Capri
Capri works best as a day trip when you choose one main area and protect your return sailing. Boats arrive at Marina Grande, below Capri town, so the crossing is only the first part of the journey. Head uphill for the town and Gardens of Augustus, or continue to Anacapri if you prefer to spend most of the day there.
Fast ferry, roughly 50 minutes to an hour
Day trips from Naples
What is the best day trip from Naples?
Pompeii is the one most visitors choose. From Napoli Garibaldi, take a Circumvesuviana train toward Sorrento that stops at Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri. The station is close to Porta Marina. Confirm the stopping pattern before boarding and check the return timetable.
How long should I spend at Pompeii?
Allow at least half a day inside for a selective visit. A longer stay suits anyone who wants residential streets, several houses and the amphitheater.
Is Herculaneum easier to visit than Pompeii?
Its excavated area is smaller, which makes a focused visit less tiring. Uneven surfaces, steps and the station walk still require planning.
Can I visit the Blue Grotto on a day trip?
Possibly, but access depends on sea conditions and queues can take a substantial part of the day. Treat it as an optional addition after checking local conditions.
