Day trips from Lisbon

Lisbon makes a good base for days out. These are the trips worth the time, with how long each takes, how to get there on your own, and when a tour is the easier choice.

  1. Sintra

Sintra works best when you choose a main palace before choosing your train. The station, historic center and hilltop sights are separate, so a short rail journey does not mean quick access to every entrance. Give Pena Palace a generous transport allowance, then use the remaining day for the center or one carefully chosen second visit.

Train, about 40 minutes from Rossio, plus onward travel

  2. Cascais

Cascais offers an easy change of pace because the railway station is close to the old center and town beaches. Start with a walk through the center, then decide between beach time and the longer route toward Boca do Inferno. You can keep the whole day on foot without arranging transfers between scattered attractions.

Train, about 40 minutes from Cais do Sodré

  3. Setúbal and Arrábida

Treat Setúbal as the transport base and Arrábida as a separate coastal excursion. The train gets you to town, but it does not deliver you to the park's beaches and viewpoints. A car or organized outing makes the combined day easier, while a rail visit works best if you arrange onward travel before leaving Lisbon.

Train, about an hour from central Lisbon, depending on connections

Questions

Day trips from Lisbon

What is the best day trip from Lisbon?

No. The station, old center and town beaches are close together, and Boca do Inferno is reachable on foot.

Can I reach Arrábida's beaches directly by train?

No. The train reaches Setúbal, and you need separate onward transport for the beaches and viewpoints within Arrábida.
