2 days in Istanbul: the old city and an Asian shore

Give your first day to Sultanahmet and your second to the market streets and a ferry crossing to Kadıköy. This keeps the main monuments together and makes room for the Asian shore without spending both days in queues. Start early, leave gaps around mosque visits and choose Topkapı Palace as your longer indoor stop. Galata Tower works as an optional finish if you still have energy.

At a glance

Where to stay
Base yourself in Sirkeci and Eminönü for the T1 tram and ferries. You can walk toward Sultanahmet in the morning and return from Kadıköy without adding a long journey across the city.

  1. Day 1: Sultanahmet courtyards and the palace headland

    Morning
Start at Hagia Sophia, checking the official visitor entrance and access rules before you arrive. Cross Sultanahmet Square to the Blue Mosque when visitor access resumes after prayers. Walk through the former Hippodrome to see the obelisks before lunch.
    Afternoon
Set aside about three hours for Topkapı Palace, including the Harem if you want to visit it. Keep the treasury and successive courtyards in the same visit. Afterwards, walk down through Gülhane Park toward the Sirkeci tram stop.
    Evening
Take the T1 tram to Karaköy or walk across Galata Bridge if your feet allow. Watch the ferry traffic from the waterfront, then choose dinner nearby. Save the climb to Galata for another visit rather than rushing uphill after the palace.
    Dinner
Have dinner at Karaköy Lokantası. Order a selection of meze and a cooked main dish from the menu.
  2. Day 2: Bazaar lanes and a crossing to Kadıköy

    Morning
Begin at the Grand Bazaar if it is open, then walk downhill through Mahmutpaşa toward the Spice Bazaar. Allow about two hours for browsing and the connecting streets. Check official opening days before deciding which bazaar to visit first.
    Afternoon
Take a ferry from Eminönü to Kadıköy. Walk from the landing into the market streets around Güneşli Bahçe Sokak, then continue toward Moda. Leave at least an hour for the seafront rather than treating the crossing as a quick return ride.
    Evening
Eat in Kadıköy before taking a ferry back to the European shore. Check the return departure before sitting down. If you return to Karaköy with daylight left, walk up toward Galata Tower for the surrounding streets, with a tower visit optional.
    Dinner
Choose Çiya Sofrası for dinner in Kadıköy. Ask which regional stews and vegetable dishes are available, and share several plates.
Tips

Tips for 2 days in Istanbul

  • Visit the mosques with covered shoulders and knees, and carry a scarf if needed. Build flexibility into the morning for prayer closures.
  • If the Basilica Cistern matters more than the palace, replace part of the palace afternoon with it rather than squeezing both into a short slot.
  • Check the destination on the ferry departure board. Eminönü and Karaköy are separate landings, even though both serve the same stretch of waterfront.
Questions

2 days in Istanbul: the old city and an Asian shore

Can I see the main sights in two days?

You can cover the Sultanahmet monuments, visit the bazaars and cross to Kadıköy. This plan gives Topkapı Palace a proper afternoon, so the Basilica Cistern and Galata Tower need a substitution or extra time.

Should I visit both bazaars?

The walk between them is part of the attraction. Start at the Grand Bazaar and descend through Mahmutpaşa to the Spice Bazaar, but check opening days and shorten the browsing if you want more time in Kadıköy.

Is Kadıköy worth the ferry journey on a short visit?

Yes, if you want a different pace after Sultanahmet. The market streets and Moda waterfront provide a useful change of scene, and the crossing gives you views that a tram journey cannot.

What should I change if it rains?

Keep Topkapı Palace and the bazaars, allowing for exposed palace courtyards. Replace the Moda seafront walk with a longer market lunch, or substitute the Basilica Cistern for part of the outdoor program.
