3 days in Interlaken from the lakes to the high railway
Use three days to see the landscape at different heights: the lakeside town, the Lauterbrunnen valley floor and Jungfraujoch. Keep the high railway outing movable until you know the forecast. The valley day has its own walking time, so you can enjoy the waterfalls without treating Lauterbrunnen as a hurried connection on the way somewhere higher.
At a glance
- Where to stay
- Stay in Interlaken center near Interlaken Ost for straightforward departures on both mountain days. Wilderswil is a quieter alternative, but include the extra train connection when planning an early start or a late return.
- Book ahead
- Jungfraujoch seat reservation, A room, in any season
- Other lengths
- 2 days 4 days
Day 1: Harder Kulm and the eastern lakeshore
- Morning
- Walk from Interlaken Ost to the Harder Kulm funicular entrance across the Aare. Check that it is operating before setting out. Ride up for the viewpoint, allowing time to identify the two lakes before returning to town.
- Afternoon
- Take a local bus toward Bönigen after checking the route and guest card coverage. Walk beside Lake Brienz and keep the afternoon loose, with time to sit by the water. Return by bus rather than assuming a boat will match your plans.
- Evening
- Follow the Höheweg past Höhematte before dinner. This is a useful evening to compare the next two days' forecasts and decide which suits Jungfraujoch. Save the relevant rail connections so that the morning does not begin with route planning.
- Dinner
- Choose an informal restaurant in town and order rösti or a vegetable pasta dish after the lakeside afternoon.
Day 2: Lauterbrunnen waterfalls and Wengen
- Morning
- Take the train from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen and walk through the village toward Staubbach Falls. Continue along the valley floor for a different angle on the cliffs. Stay on signed paths and check access before approaching any waterfall viewing route.
- Afternoon
- Return toward Lauterbrunnen station and take the cogwheel train to Wengen. Spend the afternoon walking through the car-free village rather than continuing to another summit. Leave time for a pause overlooking the valley before descending by train.
- Evening
- Return to Interlaken Ost and keep the evening close to your accommodation. If tomorrow is your summit day, check the forecast once more and organize breakfast. Walking the level paths around Höhematte is enough after the valley and village outing.
- Dinner
- Eat in Wengen before descending or back in Interlaken; choose a Swiss restaurant and order soup followed by rösti.
Day 3: The high railway and a quiet riverside finish
- Morning
- Set out early from Interlaken Ost for Jungfraujoch using the connections confirmed in the official planner. Allow for each change instead of relying on the shortest advertised journey. At the summit, begin slowly and take a break before walking outside.
- Afternoon
- Choose the summit viewing areas according to visibility, then begin the descent with time to spare. If you return through Grindelwald village, stop only if your ticket and connections allow it. Otherwise return directly and keep the afternoon free from another timed activity.
- Evening
- Walk into Unterseen for a quieter finish around the market square and river. Cross back toward Interlaken West when you are ready for dinner. This short circuit gives you a final look at town without adding another transport connection.
- Dinner
- Find a restaurant around Unterseen and order a cheese dish or seasonal vegetables with potatoes.
Tips for 3 days in Interlaken
- Read the destination display before boarding at Interlaken Ost, and follow staff guidance about the correct section of any dividing train.
- Keep the Lauterbrunnen and Jungfraujoch days interchangeable until the forecast gives you a clear reason to fix their order.
- Check Harder Kulm operating information before walking to the entrance; the town and Bönigen still make a useful lower-level day.
3 days in Interlaken from the lakes to the high railway
Can I visit Wengen and Jungfraujoch on the same day?
You can combine them with suitable connections, but this plan gives Wengen separate walking time. Adding it after Jungfraujoch can leave little energy for the village.
Do I need a car for three days?
The main journeys in this plan use trains, a funicular and local buses. Wengen is car-free, and staying near Interlaken Ost simplifies departures.
Can I replace Wengen with Trümmelbach Falls?
Yes, during its operating season. Stay in the valley after the morning walk and check the official opening information and onward bus connections before setting out.
Is Harder Kulm worth visiting under cloud?
Low cloud can hide both lakes and the mountains. Check visibility before buying your ride, and use the river and lakeside walks if the view is obscured.
