Staying in Altstadt and Neustadt
Choose your exact street carefully across these two adjoining districts. Around Rathausmarkt, pedestrian routes lead through shopping arcades and across narrow canals; toward the western Neustadt, streets climb toward St Michael's Church. A room facing a courtyard can feel quite different from one above a busy shopping street. Use the canal crossings as landmarks, since a destination that looks close on a map may require a small detour.

Getting around from Altstadt and Neustadt
Rathaus station serves the U3, while Jungfernstieg has the U1, U2 and U4 alongside S-Bahn services. Rödingsmarkt on the U3 is useful for the southern edge. Check the walking route from your hotel entrance: canals and large junctions can make the nearest station less convenient than the next one.

Staying in Altstadt and Neustadt
Which part is easiest for walking to the harbor?
The southern streets around Rödingsmarkt and Deichstrasse put you closest to the warehouse district. From the northern end, allow extra time to cross the center.
Are hotel rooms here quiet at night?
It depends on the street and room position. Ask for a courtyard room if traffic, deliveries or late pedestrians would disturb your sleep.
Is this a practical base in wet weather?
Yes. Shopping passages and the Alsterarkaden provide some shelter, although walks between sights still involve exposed streets and canal bridges.
