Staying in Innenstadt: routes beyond the Zeil

The Zeil is a useful reference point, but your daily route need not stay on the shopping street. Walk west toward the pedestrian stretches of Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse, or south through the streets around Liebfrauenberg. Check your hotel's actual entrance before arriving: a central address can still involve a walk from the nearest station exit.

Nearby

What is near Innenstadt

  1. Kleinmarkthalle

From Hauptwache, walk about 7 minutes southeast to the market on Hasengasse for food stalls and a look at everyday shopping.

  2. Goethe House

Walk about 8 minutes south from Hauptwache to Grosser Hirschgraben, keeping this indoor visit available for a wet afternoon.

  3. Alte Oper

Allow about 10 minutes from Hauptwache along Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse to reach the square outside the concert hall.

Eating

Eating in Innenstadt

Kleinmarkthalle works well for a daytime meal assembled from stalls. Around Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse, expect more sit-down choices and cafe tables. On the Zeil itself, quick meals are easy to find, but checking side streets can help when the main pedestrian route is crowded.

Getting around

Getting around from Innenstadt

Hauptwache combines S-Bahn services with the U1, U2, U3 and U8. Konstablerwache, farther east along the Zeil, has S-Bahn services and the U4, U5, U6 and U7. Choose your station according to the destination and your hotel's position rather than assuming Hauptwache is always closest.

Questions

Staying in Innenstadt: routes beyond the Zeil

Should I use Hauptwache or Konstablerwache?

Use whichever is nearer your accommodation and serves your route. Hauptwache suits the western Zeil, while Konstablerwache is useful for the eastern end and journeys on the U4 or U5.

Where can I take a walk away from the shops?

Head toward the Wallanlagen, the green spaces around the edge of the center. They offer a change of pace without requiring a journey out of Innenstadt.

Can I walk to the old town from Hauptwache?

Yes. Allow roughly 10 to 15 minutes to the Römerberg, depending on your route and stops. Going via Liebfrauenberg makes the walk part of your sightseeing.
