Staying in Altstadt: routes between the squares
Use the smaller streets between Neumarkt and Theaterplatz to break up days inside the museums. Augustusstrasse passes the Fürstenzug, while Schlossstrasse connects the palace with the shopping streets toward the south. The riverfront sits above street level in places, so choosing a route along the embankment can save repeated climbs up and down steps.

What is near Altstadt
Fürstenzug
From Neumarkt, walk about five minutes along Augustusstrasse. Leave room to step back from the mural without blocking people passing.
Brühl's Terrace
Allow five minutes from Neumarkt to the terrace steps near the river. Follow the promenade east toward the Albertinum.
Zwinger
Walk about ten minutes from Neumarkt through the palace area to Theaterplatz, then approach the Zwinger from its eastern side.
Eating in Altstadt
Around Neumarkt, eating often means a sit-down meal near the main sightseeing routes. Walk toward Wilsdruffer Strasse for more everyday lunch choices. Sophienkeller is convenient for a meal near the palace; check its menu and reserve if you need a particular dining time.
Getting around from Altstadt
Theaterplatz and Altmarkt are useful tram stops on opposite sides of the center. Tram lines through Postplatz provide further connections across Dresden. Choose the stop closest to your accommodation rather than crossing the whole historic center with luggage, particularly where cobbles slow wheeled bags.

Staying in Altstadt: routes between the squares
Where should I start a walk through Altstadt?
Start at Neumarkt, continue along Augustusstrasse past the Fürstenzug, then cross Theaterplatz toward the Zwinger. Return beside the Elbe for a different view.
Is Altstadt easy with a pushchair?
Most principal streets are manageable, but cobbles and terrace steps need planning. Use the lower riverside path when you want to avoid climbing onto Brühl's Terrace.
Can I return to my hotel between museums?
A central address makes this practical, but check each museum's re-entry rules before leaving. A timed admission may not allow you to come back later.
