Where to stay in Bruges

Bruges is small enough that no area is more than twenty-five minutes on foot from the Markt, so the question is less where you can reach and more what you hear at night and when the crowds leave. For a first visit, stay inside the canal ring: on the quiet streets near the Burg and the Dijver, or in Sint-Anna if you want calm. Choose 't Zand for more space and a lower price, the station and Minnewater for an easy train and a view of the lake, and Kruisvest on the east side if you want the windmills and the ramparts. The Markt itself is the one to approach with care: it is the center, and it is loud.

The short answer

First trip
The Burg and Dijver, near the canals and a short walk from the Belfry.
Couples
Sint-Anna for quiet brick streets, or the Dijver for canal views.
Families
't Zand for bigger rooms, or the station and Minnewater for parks and parking.
Tight budget
The station and Minnewater or 't Zand, a walk or a bus from the center.
Food and evenings
The Markt and Sint-Anna, for the old taverns and beer cafes.

Walking times run from the middle of each area: the straight line plus a third for real streets, at an easy pace, rounded to five minutes. Bruges is flat, but cobbles and canal bridges slow a walk with a suitcase. Price is our read of a standard double in the same week, from € (cheapest) to €€€€ (dearest), until booking-site prices replace it.

1 of 7 · Best for being in the middle

The Markt, for being in the middle

The Belfry, the guild houses and the Burg within two minutes, and the loudest, busiest square in the city.

The Markt is the main square: the Belfry on one side, the old guild houses along the others, and the Burg a minute's walk away. You can walk to nearly every sight in the city in ten minutes, and you are inside the town for the evening after the day-trippers leave.

It is also the busiest and noisiest place to sleep. The Belfry's carillon plays every quarter hour, horse-drawn carriages go by, and terraces stay open late. A room with windows on the square will not be quiet; ask for one at the back or on a side street. Prices are high, and the restaurants facing the square charge for the view.

Good for

  • A short stay where every minute counts
  • Walking everywhere, including to the Belfry before the queue
  • Evenings in the center, once the coaches leave

Think twice if

  • You want quiet: the carillon and the terraces carry
  • You want good-value restaurants on the doorstep
  • You dislike crowds from late morning

2 of 7 · Best for a first visit

The Burg and the Dijver, for a first visit

Canals, the Rozenhoedkaai view and the Church of Our Lady, with a calmer feel than the Markt a few steps away.

This is the strip south and east of the Burg, along the Dijver canal to the Church of Our Lady and the Groeninge Museum. It has the best-known view in the city, the Rozenhoedkaai, and the brewery on Walplein is a minute's walk. The Markt is five minutes on foot, and the streets feel old and a little less crowded.

The catch is that the canal-side lanes are the most photographed in Bruges, and from mid-morning to mid-afternoon they fill with boat tours and groups. Rooms are in old houses with steep stairs and often no lift, so check before you book. Evenings are quiet and some of the nicest in the city.

Good for

  • A first visit of two nights
  • Canal views and the quietest evenings in the center
  • The museums and the brewery on foot

Think twice if

  • Steep stairs are hard for you: many old houses have no lift
  • You want a bargain: it is among the dearest parts
  • You dislike a crowd outside at midday

3 of 7 · Best for quiet evenings

Sint-Anna, for quiet evenings

Small brick streets in the north-east, with the old tavern Café Vlissinghe and about ten minutes' walk to the Markt.

Sint-Anna sits in the north-east of the old center, around its own church and the old tavern Café Vlissinghe. The streets are narrow, the houses are low and brick, and in the evening you meet more locals than tourists. The Markt is about ten minutes' walk, and the Kruisvest windmills are close.

It has a smaller choice of hotels and more guesthouses than the middle of town. Restaurants are few, so you walk for dinner. Many visitors say this is the part of Bruges where the old city still feels lived in, and the price is lower than at the Burg.

Good for

  • Couples and quiet evenings
  • The old tavern and the windmills close by
  • A calmer bed within ten minutes of the Markt

Think twice if

  • You want a lot of restaurants on the doorstep
  • You want to roll a suitcase over cobbles from the station
  • You need a big hotel with every service

Staying in Sint-Anna: nearby sights, food and getting around

4 of 7 · Best for space and a lower price

't Zand and Sint-Jacob, for space and a lower price

A big square, the concert hall and larger hotels on the west side, about ten minutes from the Markt.

't Zand is a wide square on the west side of the old center, with the concert hall next to it. Around it and across Sint-Jacob there are larger hotels than elsewhere in Bruges, some with parking, and the Saturday market takes over the square. The Markt is about ten minutes' walk along Zilverstraat.

It is not as pretty as the canal streets, and the square is more modern in feel. In return you get more room, more choice and a lower price. Evenings are quiet except when there is a concert or an event at the hall. It is a reasonable base if you arrive by car, though you will still have to find a place to park it.

Good for

  • Families and anyone who wants a larger room
  • Concerts at the hall
  • Saturday market mornings

Think twice if

  • You want canals outside the window
  • You want to walk out into the old lanes
  • You are here on a quiet Saturday morning: the market starts early

5 of 7 · Best for trains and a lower price

The station and Minnewater, for trains and a lower price

The station, the lake and the Begijnhof, with the cheapest rooms of the central areas and a long walk to the Markt.

The area south of the old center, from the railway station across to the Minnewater lake and the Begijnhof, is the easiest for arriving by train. The lake and its park are pleasant and calm, the Begijnhof is a short walk, and hotels are bigger and cheaper than inside the canal ring.

It is not the old Bruges you came to see. The Markt is 20 to 25 minutes on foot or a short bus ride, and the streets around the station are busy and unremarkable. It works well for a night on the way somewhere else, or if you have luggage and a train at the other end.

Good for

  • Arriving or leaving by train
  • A lower price and bigger rooms
  • The lake, the park and the Begijnhof

Think twice if

  • You want to be in the old streets in the evening
  • You dislike a 20 to 25 minute walk each way
  • You want lanes and canals out of the front door

Staying in Station and Minnewater: nearby sights, food and getting around

6 of 7 · Best for ramparts and windmills

Kruisvest and the east side, for ramparts and windmills

A green walk along the old ramparts and the windmills, a quiet part of town and a twenty-minute walk to the Markt.

The east side of the ring, around the Kruisvest ramparts, has the windmills and a grassy path along the old moat. It has a handful of guesthouses and apartments, and is the most local-feeling edge of the old center. The Markt is around 15 to 20 minutes' walk.

There are few restaurants, and you are not in the lanes, so most evenings you walk in. In return it is quiet and cheaper than inside the ring. Look at the street before you book: the ring road carries some traffic, and a room facing it will hear it.

Good for

  • Walking the ramparts and the windmills
  • A quiet bed and a lower price
  • Cycling out to the canal villages

Think twice if

  • You want hotels and restaurants on the doorstep
  • You prefer to be inside the old lanes at night

Staying in Kruisvest and the east side: nearby sights, food and getting around

7 of 7 · Best for a local feel

Langestraat and Sint-Gillis, for a local feel

A residential district in the north-west with a few guesthouses, a canal, and a ten to fifteen minute walk to the Markt.

Sint-Gillis, in the north-west of the old center around Langestraat, is a residential district of terraces and small cafes. The canal ring runs beside it, and you can walk to the Markt in about ten to fifteen minutes. It has a couple of small guesthouses and holiday apartments.

There are fewer sights, fewer restaurants and few hotels, and it is quiet in the evening. It suits people who want to feel they have rented a house in a Flemish town. It also has little to offer on rainy days, so you will walk to the center for most things.

Good for

  • A local feel and a house-like stay
  • Quiet nights
  • A lower price than inside the ring

Think twice if

  • You want hotel services and a lobby
  • You want to eat out within a few steps

Before you book

Before you book a room in Bruges

The practical things that decide whether a good hotel in Bruges makes a good stay.

  • The city taxBruges charges €3.75 per person per night for 2026 and 2027, plus 12% VAT, so €4.20, on hotels, guest rooms, hostels and holiday homes. Children under 18 are exempt. The rate is due to rise to €5 a night from 2028. Some booking sites show it separately or add it at the end, so check the final price.
  • From Brussels AirportTrains run to Bruges with a change, usually in Brussels, and the journey takes about an hour and a half. From Brussels-Midi the direct train to Bruges takes about an hour.
  • From Brussels South CharleroiIt is a long way: a shuttle bus to Charleroi-Sud station, then a train with a change. Plan on around two and a half hours on the train alone.
  • The station to the centerThe railway station is south of the center, 20 to 25 minutes' walk to the Markt. City buses cover the same route in around ten minutes.
  • Stairs and liftsMany hotels are in old houses with steep, narrow stairs, and some have no lift. If stairs are hard for you, check the floor and the lift before you book.
  • Cobbles and luggageThe streets are cobbled and cars are restricted in the center. A wheeled bag is slow over the stones, so ask your hotel how to get to the door.
  • Weekends and the Christmas marketFriday and Saturday nights, school holidays and December are the busiest and dearest, and the squares are loud on Saturday evenings.
Questions

Where to stay in Bruges: questions people ask

What's the best area to stay in Bruges for a first visit?

The Burg and Dijver area, or somewhere in the canal ring on a side street. You are within five minutes' walk of the Belfry and the canals, and it is calmer at night than the Markt itself.

Is it better to stay in the center of Bruges or near the station?

In the center if you want the old streets in the evening, because the day-trippers leave and the city is at its best. Near the station if you want a lower price and an easy train, at the cost of a 20 to 25 minute walk or a bus.

Is the Markt a good place to stay?

It is the most convenient place and the loudest. The carillon plays every quarter hour and the terraces stay open late. A room at the back or on a nearby street is a better bet.

Which area is best for families?

't Zand or the station and Minnewater, where rooms and hotels are bigger and the park is close. Both are a short bus ride or a walk from the center.

Where should I stay if I'm on a budget?

Near the station, around 't Zand or on the east side near Kruisvest. Rooms are cheaper than inside the canal ring, and booking mid-week helps in every area.

Can you walk everywhere in Bruges?

Yes. The old center is small and flat, and most sights are within fifteen minutes of the Markt on foot. Only the station is further, at 20 to 25 minutes.

Is it worth staying a night in Bruges rather than a day trip?

Yes. By late afternoon the coaches leave, the lanes empty, and the Belfry and the canals look their best at dusk and in the morning.

How much is the city tax in Bruges?

€3.75 per person per night in 2026 and 2027, plus 12% VAT, so about €4.20. Children under 18 are exempt. It rises to €5 from 2028.
