Bilbao tours and tickets

Bilbao is easy to book. The Guggenheim is the only ticket worth buying ahead, and only by a few days in summer. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe now needs a free reservation for its steps. Pintxo crawls, the Casco Viejo and the Vizcaya Bridge can all be done on the day. Weekend dinners in the old town sell out, so plan a table.

Museums and galleries

The Guggenheim is the one museum with a queue, and the Fine Arts Museum is quieter.
  1. Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

Frank Gehry's titanium museum on the river, with modern art, big sculptures by Richard Serra and Jeff Koons, and changing exhibitions. Timed tickets, audio guides and guided visits are sold. A visit takes two to three hours.

Which to pick. Buy a timed ticket a few days ahead in summer, and go at opening. A guided visit helps if the building and the Serra galleries are the draw.

  2. Bilbao Fine Arts Museum

A museum with Spanish masters, Basque art and a good modern collection, in a calm park setting. Tickets are sold at the door and online, and visits take about two hours.

Which to pick. Buy at the door. It is a good wet-day option and rarely busy, so a tour is not needed.

Monuments and landmarks

The sights are open and mostly free, so booking is about a guide or a view.
  1. Vizcaya Bridge

A hanging transporter bridge between Getxo and Portugalete, a UNESCO site. You cross on the gondola, or take the lift and walkway on top for a view. Crossing takes only a few minutes.

Which to pick. Take the gondola for a short trip, and the top walkway if you have a head for heights. Both are simple to do alone.

  2. Casco Viejo walking tour

A guided walk of the old town and its Siete Calles, with the cathedral, the Plaza Nueva and the Ribera market. Tours last two hours and run in English.

Which to pick. Take one on your first morning if you like context, then return alone for lunch. The district is free to wander.

  3. Artxanda funicular

A short funicular from the city to a hilltop with views over Bilbao and the ría. It runs often, and a ticket is sold at the station. Many people go at sunset.

Which to pick. Go in the late afternoon with good weather. No booking is needed, and a guided tour would add little.

Food tours and classes

The food is the second reason to come, and the best way in is to eat with someone who knows the bars.
  1. Pintxo crawl

A guided evening walk through several bars in the old town, with a pintxo and a drink at each. Groups are small, and a guide explains what to order and how the Basque bar system works.

Which to pick. Join if it is your first night, since it teaches you the routine. Go alone on later nights using what you learned.

  2. Basque cooking class

A half-day class that starts at a market and ends with a shared meal, often with dishes such as cod and peppers or Basque cheesecake. Classes are small and held in kitchens near the center.

Which to pick. Choose a morning class that finishes with lunch. It suits anyone who wants to bring a recipe home.

Day trips

The coast and the Basque country are close, but Gaztelugatxe has a reservation system.
  1. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

A small islet with a hermitage reached by a causeway and 241 steps, about an hour from Bilbao. Access is by free reservation made online through the local scheme, with a time slot, and in low season there are fewer limits.

Which to pick. Reserve the slot as soon as your dates are fixed, and go early in the day. Many day tours include the booking and transport.

Several days aheadTours and tickets on Viator
  2. San Sebastián

A seaside city with a famous bay and a food scene, about an hour and a quarter by coach. Day tours combine it with other Basque coast towns, but it is easy alone by coach.

Which to pick. Go alone if you want a long lunch. A guided day makes sense if you also want Gaztelugatxe or the coast in one trip.

  3. Gernika

A town that was bombed in the Spanish Civil War, with a peace museum, the Assembly House and the Oak of Gernika. It is about 45 minutes from Bilbao by train. Guided tours add the history.

Which to pick. Take the train alone for a quiet half day, and book a guide only if you want the political history explained.

Questions

Booking tours and tickets in Bilbao

Do I need to book the Guggenheim?

Not always, but timed tickets avoid the queue and sell out on summer weekends. Buy a few days ahead in July and August, and pick the first slot of the day.

Is Gaztelugatxe free?

Yes, but you need a free reservation for a time slot online. The steps are free to climb with a booking, and the hermitage entrance may have a small fee for the bell.

Is the Bilbao Card worth it?

It is worth it if you will use trams, buses and the metro every day and visit several museums. For one or two sights and a few rides, single tickets are cheaper.

Do I need to book a pintxo crawl?

No. Pintxo bars work without a booking, and you order at the counter. A guided crawl helps on your first night, and the group slots fill at weekends.

Can I get to San Sebastián and back in a day?

Yes, by coach in about an hour and a quarter each way. A day trip is easy, but a full day leaves only a few hours to eat and walk in the old part.

What can wait until I arrive?

The Vizcaya Bridge, the Fine Arts Museum, the funicular and a pintxo night can all be bought the same day. Reserve Gaztelugatxe and a dinner table first.
