Berlin tours and tickets

Berlin is a city where a few things need planning and the rest is free. The Reichstag dome requires registration, and the best Museum Island buildings sell timed tickets. The Wall sites, the memorials and the East Side Gallery cost nothing. Day trips to Potsdam and Sachsenhausen are easy by train. Book the dome first, then fill the days with walking tours and one or two museums.

Book these first

Reichstag dome
2 to 4 weeks ahead in summer. Entry requires registration and the slots go early.
Museum Island and special exhibitions
a few days to a week ahead. Timed tickets are common and queues are long without one.

Monuments and landmarks

The Reichstag dome is the only ticket that really needs planning. The others are open air and free.
  1. Reichstag dome

A glass dome above the German parliament with a spiral ramp and a view over the government district. Entry is free but you must register online in advance, and an audio guide is included. Security checks are strict.

Which to pick. Register as soon as slots open for your dates, and choose a sunset time if you can. Bring photo ID, because it is checked at the entrance.

  2. Brandenburg Gate

The best-known monument in the city, on Pariser Platz, open to all at any hour. Walking tours start from here and cover the Wall and the government district.

Which to pick. Go early in the morning when it is quiet. You do not need a ticket, and a tour is only for the history that surrounds it.

Museums and galleries

Museum Island is a group of museums with separate and combined tickets. Some buildings are closed for renovation, so check before you plan.
  1. Museum Island

Five museums on an island in the Spree, including the Pergamon, the Neues and the Altes. Timed tickets are sold, and a day pass covers several buildings. Which ones are open changes with renovation.

Which to pick. Check which museum is open for your dates, then book a timed ticket. A day pass is good if you want two or three, and an audio guide helps in the Neues.

  2. Topography of Terror

A free outdoor and indoor exhibition on the site of the Gestapo headquarters, beside a long section of the Wall. It is serious and detailed, and takes about an hour and a half.

Which to pick. Walk in without a ticket. A guided visit is offered at set times if you want context, but the documents speak clearly alone.

Guided walks and tours

The best way into the Cold War story. Walks start daily, and the good ones are small.
  1. Wall and Cold War walking tour

A guided walk of two to three hours covering the Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, the death strip and the government quarter. Small-group and private tours run all day, and many include the Bernauer Strasse memorial.

Which to pick. Choose a small group with a guide who is a historian or a local. Book a day or two ahead, and choose a morning start.

  2. Berlin Wall Memorial

The most complete section of the border strip, on Bernauer Strasse, with a visitor center and a viewing tower. Entry is free, and guided tours of the grounds are offered at set times.

Which to pick. Go on your own first, then join a guided tour only if you want the human stories. Combine it with a walk to Mauerpark.

Day trips

Two short train trips, both with a different mood. Potsdam is a day of parks and palaces, and Sachsenhausen is a sober memorial.
  1. Potsdam

Sanssouci Palace and its park, with other palaces, a Dutch quarter and a lake, 30 minutes by regional train. Sanssouci sells timed tickets, and a day ticket covers several palaces.

Which to pick. Take the train and buy the Sanssouci ticket for a morning slot. A guided day trip is useful if you want the history of Frederick the Great.

  2. Sachsenhausen Memorial

A former concentration camp in Oranienburg, about 40 minutes by S-Bahn. Entry is free, and audio guides and guided tours are offered. Allow three hours, and expect a heavy, serious visit.

Which to pick. Go on your own with an audio guide, or book a guided tour for a fuller account. Allow time to take it in, and do not plan a late afternoon event.

Questions

Booking tours and tickets in Berlin

Is the Reichstag dome free?

Yes, but you must register for a time slot online and bring photo ID. Slots go early in summer, so register as soon as your dates are fixed.

Is the Museum Pass Berlin worth it?

It is if you plan two or more museums over a few days. For one visit, a single timed ticket is simpler. Check which Museum Island buildings are open before you buy.

Which Museum Island building is best?

The Neues Museum has Nefertiti, and the Pergamon is closed in part for renovation. Check the official site for what is open on your dates, then choose one or two buildings.

Do I need a ticket for the Wall sites?

No. The Berlin Wall Memorial, the East Side Gallery and the Topography of Terror are free. Guided tours are optional and mostly add stories and context.

Can I visit Sachsenhausen without a tour?

Yes. Entry is free, and an audio guide is on sale. A guided tour gives more depth if you want it. Allow around three hours and wear walking shoes.

What can wait until I arrive?

Wall tours, the East Side Gallery, the Brandenburg Gate and Tempelhofer Feld can all be done on the day. Register for the Reichstag dome and book Museum Island first.
