Where to stay in Annecy

Annecy is small, and the choice is between the town and the water. The old town, the lakeside gardens and the station all sit within a twenty-minute walk of each other. Stay in the old town for canals and arcades, along the lakeside for views and space, and near the station for value and an easy arrival. Veyrier-du-Lac, Sévrier and Talloires are lake villages several kilometers out: lovely, but they suit a car, a bike or a boat, not a short city break. In July and August the old town is very crowded and every area is dear, so book early.

The short answer

First trip
The old town for atmosphere, or the lakeside for the water and more space.
Couples
The old town, or Talloires if you have a car and want to be on the lake.
Families
The lakeside, close to the beaches and gardens, or Annecy-le-Vieux for the Albigny beach.
Tight budget
The station and center, a short walk from the old town and usually cheaper.
Quiet
Sévrier or Annecy-le-Vieux, both calm in the evening.

How we judge an area of Annecy: walking time to the sights, noise at night, transport, and price. Nothing on this page is paid for, and the hotels we choose will say who chose them and when they last stayed.

Walking times are the straight line between two points plus a third for real streets, at an easy pace, rounded to five minutes. They are measured from the middle of each area, so a hotel at its edge will be a few minutes either way. The lake villages are far enough that the time says 'over an hour': for them, count the boat, the bus or the car instead. Price is our read of a standard double in the same week, from € (cheapest) to €€€€ (dearest), until booking-site prices replace it. Prices climb sharply from June to August.

1 of 7 · Best for atmosphere and a first visit

The old town, for canals and arcades

The Thiou canal, arcaded streets and the castle above. The prettiest base in Annecy, and the busiest.

The old town lies on both sides of the Thiou, the short river that carries the lake out through the center. Narrow streets, arcades, flower-hung bridges and the Palais de l'Isle on its island are all within a few minutes of each other, and the castle sits on the hill above. The lake gardens are about a five-minute walk.

It is also the most crowded part of town. In July and August the streets are packed by mid-morning, and the quays are loud with diners and bars until late. Rooms are small, many buildings have no lift, and the best-placed hotels charge accordingly. Streets away from the canal are quieter, and cars are not welcome in the middle.

Good for

  • A first visit of two or three nights
  • Seeing the canals early or late, before the crowds
  • Walking to everything, including the lake

Think twice if

  • You want quiet summer nights on the canals
  • Stairs are hard for you: many old buildings have no lift
  • You are driving: parking near the old town is limited

2 of 7 · Best for views and the water

The lakeside, for the water and more space

Green lawns and plane trees on the lake edge, a few minutes from the old town. Flat, open and good for families.

East of the old town, the Jardins de l'Europe, the Champ de Mars and the Pâquier run down to the water. This is the part of Annecy where you see the lake and the mountains together, with the footbridge of the Pont des Amours and the passenger boats at the quay. The old town is five to ten minutes away on flat ground.

It is the most expensive place to stay, because it includes the grandest hotels on the water. It is also busy by day, with strollers, bike hire and ice cream, and the gardens host events and fairs in summer, so ask what is on. Rooms on the lake side cost more than those facing the street.

Good for

  • Lake views and the boats from the quay
  • Families, with lawns, beaches and gardens close by
  • Flat walks to the old town and the station

Think twice if

  • You are watching the budget: this is the dearest area
  • You want to sleep through an event on the lawns
  • You want to be inside the old town itself

3 of 7 · Best for value, trains and coaches

The station and the center, for value and an easy arrival

A short walk from the old town, with the rail and coach stations at the door. Less charm, better prices.

North-west of the old town, the streets around the station and Rue Carnot hold the practical hotels, the shops and the coach and rail stations. The old town is about ten minutes away on foot, and the lake gardens about fifteen. It is the easiest place to arrive without a car, and it suits one-night stops and day trips.

The streets are plain, not pretty, and traffic is heavier than in the old town. The blocks right around the station are busy at night, like any station, so choose a street a little way back and keep your bag close in the station itself. Rooms cost noticeably less than in the old town in summer.

Good for

  • A tighter budget
  • Arriving or leaving by train or coach
  • A base for a day trip to Geneva or Chamonix

Think twice if

  • You want charm outside the door
  • You will be walking back late through the streets next to the station

Staying in The station and the center: nearby sights, food and getting around

4 of 7 · Best for beaches and quiet evenings

Annecy-le-Vieux and Albigny, for the beach and calm

The north-east shore: a lifeguarded beach, a park and quiet streets, a bus ride or a bike ride from the old town.

Annecy-le-Vieux is a residential town that merges with Annecy to the north-east. Albigny, on the shore, has a public beach, a lawn and a view down the lake, and the cycle path to the old town runs along the water. The old town is about thirty minutes on foot, or a short bus or bike ride.

There are fewer hotels, more apartments, and very little to do after dark. It suits families with children who want a beach, and people who want somewhere calm. It is also the home of Le Clos des Sens, one of the region's best-known restaurants. Check the bus times for late evenings.

Good for

  • A beach and lawn within walking distance
  • Calm evenings and fewer crowds
  • Bike rides along the lake into town

Think twice if

  • You want to walk to the old town and eat out nearby
  • You rely on late buses

5 of 7 · Best for views, with a car or a bike

Veyrier-du-Lac, for lake views on the east shore

A village on the east shore under Mont Veyrier, with a small beach and wide views. A few kilometers out, so a car or a bike helps.

Veyrier-du-Lac sits on the east side of the lake, facing the old town across the water, about five kilometers by road. The shore has a small beach and a harbor, and the hill above has paths and a cable car up Mont Veyrier. The cycle path passes through, so a bike gets you to the old town in about half an hour.

It is a village, not a town: a handful of restaurants, a few hotels, and little life after dinner. Public buses and boats run, but less often than in town, and in winter some services are thin. It makes sense if you have a car and want views and a swim from your door.

Good for

  • Lake views and a quiet shore
  • A car or a bike for getting around
  • Walks up Mont Veyrier

Think twice if

  • You want to walk to restaurants in the evening
  • You rely on public transport, especially outside summer

Staying in Veyrier-du-Lac: nearby sights, food and getting around

6 of 7 · Best for quiet, with a bike or a bus

Sévrier, for a quiet stay on the west shore

A lakeside town about six kilometers south of the old town, on the cycle path, with beaches and campsites.

Sévrier lies on the west shore, about six kilometers south of the old town. It has public beaches, a handful of shops and restaurants, and the cycle path from Annecy runs through it, so a bike is a good way in and out. The lake and the Semnoz mountain are the draw.

It feels like a lake resort in summer and a quiet village in winter. There is little nightlife, and many places close out of season. Buses connect to Annecy, but check the last one if you plan an evening in town.

Good for

  • Beaches and swimming away from the crowds
  • Cycling the lake path
  • A calm stay with fewer visitors

Think twice if

  • You want evenings in the old town without a drive or a late bus
  • You are visiting out of season, when much is closed

Staying in Sévrier: nearby sights, food and getting around

7 of 7 · Best for a special stay on the water

Talloires, for a lakeside stay out of town

A small village on the east shore, about twelve kilometers from the old town, with some of the lake's best hotels.

Talloires is a village on the eastern shore, about twelve kilometers from Annecy by road. It has a small harbor, a historic abbey, a few well-known hotels and restaurants, and the Col de la Forclaz paragliding take-off above it. In summer a passenger boat links it to the old town.

It is not a place to see Annecy from. The old town is a long drive or a boat ride away, and most hotels are dear and small. It suits a special occasion, a slow stay, or paragliding. Many places close in winter, so check before you book.

Good for

  • A special stay beside the water
  • Paragliding from the Col de la Forclaz
  • A boat into town in summer

Think twice if

  • You want to walk to the old town: it is far
  • You are visiting in winter, when many places close
