Český Krumlov castle and its tower on a rock above a bend of the Vltava river, with the old town roofs below
Český Krumlov · Itinerary

2 days in Český Krumlov with time for the castle and river

Use your first morning for the castle interiors, then explore the town from both sides of the Vltava. This plan keeps the main sights close together and leaves the second morning flexible for paddling or an indoor visit. Walk Horní and Široká later in the day, when groups have thinned out, and save the climb to Plešivec for your last evening.

At a glance

Where to stay
Stay in Inner Town (Vnitřní Město) for short walks between the square, river and restaurants. Choose Latrán if your castle tour is early and you prefer to finish the evening on the castle side of the river.

  1. Day 1: Castle interiors and the lanes below

    Morning
Book a castle interior tour in your preferred language, then arrange your morning around its starting time. Walk through the courtyards before the tour and climb the tower afterwards if your legs allow. The tower needs a separate visit.
    Afternoon
Continue across the Cloak Bridge to the castle gardens. After lunch, return downhill through Latrán rather than crossing straight back to the square. If a brewery tour interests you, check the Eggenberg brewery's available times before committing the rest of the afternoon.
    Evening
Cross into the Inner Town for a walk through Náměstí Svornosti, Horní and Široká. Leave the main square between stops so you see the narrower lanes as well. This is a useful time for photographs once the larger visiting groups have left.
    Dinner
Have dinner at Krčma Šatlava and choose a grilled meat dish from the day's menu.
  2. Day 2: The Vltava and the southern hillside

    Morning
Take a canoe or raft outing if conditions suit you. Ask the operator about the route, weirs and return arrangements before setting off. In poor weather, replace the outing with Egon Schiele Art Centrum and a longer walk through the Inner Town.
    Afternoon
Visit the Church of St Vitus when it is open to visitors, allowing for services. Afterwards, walk back toward Široká for the gallery if you spent the morning on the river. Keep some time free to dry off or change before dinner.
    Evening
Climb into Plešivec while there is still daylight and look back toward the castle tower and roofs. Return to the Inner Town for dinner. If you are leaving that evening, shorten the hillside walk and collect your bags before heading to the bus station.
    Dinner
Choose Laibon for a vegetarian dinner and order a vegetable main from the current menu.

  • Carry shoes with good grip for cobbles and hillside lanes, especially if rain is forecast.
Questions

2 days in Český Krumlov with time for the castle and river

Is two days enough for Český Krumlov?

Two days give you time for a castle interior tour, the old lanes and either a river outing or gallery visit. A theater tour needs extra planning because places are limited.

Should I book the castle before arriving?

Book ahead in summer if you want an interior tour in a particular language. Check the official site for available routes and times before arranging the rest of your morning.

Can I follow this plan without canoeing?

Yes. Spend the second morning at Egon Schiele Art Centrum, then visit St Vitus and walk through Plešivec. Check the gallery's official opening information before setting out.

Where should I stay for a short visit?

Inner Town (Vnitřní Město) puts the square and old lanes close to your room. Latrán works well for an early castle visit and evenings on that side of the river.
