The broken Pont Saint-Bénézet over the Rhône in Avignon, with the cathedral and the Palais des Papes behind
Avignon · Itinerary

2 days in Avignon with time for the river

Give the first day to the northern end of the old town, where the palace, garden and bridge sit close together. Spend the second moving from the market toward the quieter eastern streets, then cross the Rhône for the view back. This keeps the main sights together without turning each day into a march between opposite gates.

At a glance

Where to stay
Choose Place de l'Horloge and the center for short walks to the palace and easy returns between sights. Ask about street noise if your room faces a square, especially during the July theater season.

Other lengths

  1. Day 1: The palace quarter and the bridge

    Morning
Take an early slot at the Palais des Papes and allow two hours inside. Approach along Rue de la République and through Place de l'Horloge, leaving the smaller streets for later rather than interrupting your timed visit.
    Afternoon
Rest at Rocher des Doms before walking down toward Pont Saint-Bénézet. Visit the bridge, then follow the outside of the walls toward Porte de l'Oulle. This gives you a close view of the bridge before tomorrow's wider river panorama.
    Evening
Return through the old town toward Place des Carmes. Keep the evening flexible so a long palace visit does not force a rushed dinner. In July, choose a performance only after checking its venue and running time.
    Dinner
Choose a bistro around Place des Carmes and order a seasonal vegetable dish or the day's fish.
  2. Day 2: Market provisions, water wheels and island views

    Morning
Start at Les Halles on Place Pie, Tuesday to Sunday, and buy picnic provisions before the stalls wind down. On Monday, replace the market with a bakery breakfast and spend the extra time around Rue des Teinturiers.
    Afternoon
Follow Rue des Teinturiers beside the stream, pausing by the water wheels. Later, cross Pont Édouard Daladier to Île de la Barthelasse. Stay near the riverbank for views of the bridge rather than attempting a long circuit of the island.
    Evening
Return across Pont Édouard Daladier before you are tired, allowing time for the full crossing. Finish around Place de l'Horloge if you want a short walk back to a central hotel after dinner.
    Dinner
Eat at a central restaurant and look for a Provençal vegetable dish, followed by local cheese if available.
Tips

Tips for 2 days in Avignon

  • Swap the two days if your market morning falls on Monday, keeping the palace booking aligned with the change.
  • Carry water for the bridge and island walk, where exposed stretches can feel much hotter than the old town lanes.
  • Keep your final afternoon inside the walls if you need to collect luggage before a train.
Questions

2 days in Avignon with time for the river

Are two days enough for Avignon?

Two days cover the palace, bridge, market and several old town walks. Choose one museum instead of the island if paintings matter more to you than river views.

Which day should I visit Les Halles?

Plan your market morning from Tuesday to Sunday. If your stay includes Monday, put the palace and bridge on that day and visit the market on the other morning.

Can I walk this whole itinerary?

Most of the route is walkable, but the island crossing adds distance beyond the compact old town. Skip that section if you prefer frequent rests or have limited walking time.

Should I include a day trip in two days?

Keep both days in Avignon for a first visit. A day trip would leave little time for the palace, market and quieter streets without rushing.
