Dresden tours and tickets

Dresden has a few timed tickets and many free sights. The Historic Green Vault is the one to book first, and the Semperoper needs weeks for the best productions. The Frauenkirche, the Zwinger courtyard and Brühl's Terrace are open and easy. Saxon Switzerland and Meissen are simple by train.

Museums and galleries

The Dresden State Art Collections run most of the museums, and timed entry applies to the busiest.
  1. Historic Green Vault

A baroque treasure chamber of Augustus the Strong, with rooms of jewels and ivory. Entry is by timed ticket with limited numbers, and audio guides are included. A separate New Green Vault has the open-display rooms.

Which to pick. Book the Historic Green Vault first, as slots fill in the main season. If it is gone, the New Green Vault is easier to enter and still impressive.

  2. Albertinum

A museum of modern and contemporary art, from the Romantic painters to the 20th century. It sits on the edge of Brühl's Terrace.

Which to pick. Buy at the door, unless you plan a combined pass. It is quiet and rarely crowded.

Churches and palaces

The reconstruction of the old town is the story, and the main sights are close together.
  1. Frauenkirche

The baroque church rebuilt after the bombing, with a dome you can climb. Entry to the nave is free or low-cost outside services, and the dome has its own ticket.

Which to pick. Visit in the morning, then climb the dome for the view. Check service times, since the nave closes for events.

  2. Residenzschloss

The royal palace, which holds the Green Vault, a Turkish chamber and a coin cabinet. A combined ticket covers several museums under one roof.

Which to pick. Buy the combined ticket online and plan around the Green Vault slot. Skip a guide unless you love the history of Saxony.

  3. Semperoper

The opera house, with performances and guided backstage tours. The best productions sell out weeks ahead, and the tours run during the day.

Which to pick. Book performance tickets as soon as the schedule opens. If you cannot get one, the daytime tour of the building is a good second choice.

On the water

The Elbe is a simple pleasure, and the old paddle steamers are part of the show.
  1. Pillnitz Palace by steamer

A riverside summer palace with an Asian-style roof and a large garden, reached by a paddle steamer or tram. The palace and gardens have separate tickets, and the camellia house is a highlight in season.

Which to pick. Take the steamer one way and the tram back. Buy the garden ticket on the day, and skip the guide.

  2. Elbe paddle steamer

Historic steamers run along the river through the old town to the palaces upstream, with tours of various lengths. They run on a timetable from spring to autumn.

Which to pick. Take the sightseeing cruise for a short trip, or go on a longer trip to Pillnitz. Buy at the pier on the day in most seasons.

Day trips

The region is a rail map of short trips, and none needs a guide.
  1. Saxon Switzerland

Sandstone towers, forests and the Bastei bridge, reached by S-Bahn and a ferry. Walking trails vary from a short climb to a full day. Guided hikes are sold.

Which to pick. Go on a weekday and start early. A guided hike is useful if you want routes explained or are short on time.

  2. Meissen

A small town on the Elbe, known for porcelain and a hilltop cathedral, about 40 minutes by S-Bahn. The porcelain manufactory has a museum and workshop demonstrations.

Which to pick. Buy the museum ticket on arrival, and walk up to the castle. A tour is optional.

  3. Moritzburg

A baroque hunting lodge on an artificial lake, west of the city, reached by bus or a heritage steam railway on selected days.

Which to pick. Choose the steam railway for the ride, and check the timetable on the official site before you book.

Questions

Booking tours and tickets in Dresden

Is the Green Vault worth the effort?

Yes, if you like treasuries and baroque craft. It is small, so it takes about an hour, and the timed ticket is the one thing worth reserving.

Do I need a guide in the old town?

Not for the main sights, which are clear and close. A guide helps with the post-war story of the reconstruction.

Can I get a Semperoper ticket on the day?

Sometimes there are returns, but the best productions sell out. A daytime tour is the fallback if you cannot get a seat.

What about the Christmas market?

It runs from late November. Hotels fill months ahead, but visiting the market itself is free.

Can I do Saxon Switzerland without a car?

Yes. The S-Bahn runs to Rathen, and a short ferry crosses the river. Check the timetable and the weather before you set out.

What can wait until I arrive?

The Frauenkirche, Brühl's Terrace, the Zwinger courtyard and the Elbe steamers can all be done on the day. Book the Green Vault and the Semperoper first.
