Cappadocia tours and tickets
The balloon flight is the booking that matters in Cappadocia, and it sells out weeks ahead in spring and autumn. Everything else is flexible. The open-air museums and underground cities sell tickets at the gate, and valley walks cost nothing. A driver or a guided day tour saves time, because the sights are spread across several villages.
Book these first
- Hot air balloon flight
- 2 to 4 weeks ahead, longer in April to June and September to October. Places are limited and flights are canceled on windy mornings, so leave at least one spare day.
- A cave hotel for your first night
- a month ahead in spring and autumn. The best rooms with terraces over the valley go first, and many small hotels have only a handful of rooms.
- A driver or a hire car
- a few days ahead, or on arrival in low season. Public buses link the main towns, but the valleys, the underground cities and Ihlara are far easier with your own transport.

Experiences and nights out
Hot air balloon flight at dawn
Balloons lift off before sunrise from fields near Göreme and float over valleys and rock chimneys for about an hour. Flights are canceled in high wind, so a spare morning matters. Standard and smaller-basket flights are both sold.
Which to pick. Book your first morning and keep a second free. Choose a smaller basket if you want more room, and ask what happens to your money if the flight is canceled.
2 to 4 weeks, more in spring and autumnTours and tickets on ViatorSunrise and sunset viewpoints
Several hills around Göreme and Uçhisar give wide views of the balloons and the rocks. Tours drive you up before dawn, or you can walk at dusk and watch the light change.
Which to pick. Go alone for free if you are happy to walk. A sunrise tour makes sense for the transport, and it is the cheapest way to watch if you are not flying.
Not neededTours and tickets on ViatorTurkish night with a show
Evening events in a cave venue, with a meal, folk dance and sometimes whirling dervish music. They are sold with a hotel pickup.
Which to pick. Treat it as a fun evening, not a cultural lesson. Check what the price covers, and whether drinks are extra.

A group of rock-cut chapels and monastic rooms with Byzantine frescoes, the best known in the region. Photography is limited inside the painted churches, and the paths are steep in places.

A multi-level cave town with narrow tunnels, stables, kitchens and rolling stone doors. Visitors descend several floors by low passages, and guides are optional.

Outdoors
Red Valley and Rose Valley hike
A walk through pink and red canyon walls, with rock churches and small cave doors. The standard route takes two to three hours and ends at a viewpoint at sunset.
Which to pick. Walk it at sunset on your own with a map. A guide adds context and finds the less obvious churches.
Not needed, free to walkTours and tickets on ViatorPigeon Valley walk
A short valley hike between Göreme and Uçhisar, past pigeon houses cut into the rock and orchards in the lower part.
Which to pick. Go in the morning. It's an easy half-day without a guide, and the path is well marked.
Not neededTours and tickets on ViatorHorse ride or ATV tour
Guided rides through the valleys at sunrise or sunset, on horses or quad bikes. Sessions last one to two hours.
Which to pick. Choose a horse ride for quiet and photos, and a quad for speed. Ask about safety gear and group size.

Day trips
Ihlara Valley and Selime Monastery
A deep green canyon with a river and rock churches along a walking path, and a large rock monastery nearby. Tours add a lunch by the river.
Which to pick. Choose a full-day tour that includes both. The walk is about an hour, and the canyon floor is cool.
A few days aheadOfficial siteTours and tickets on ViatorSoğanlı Valley
A quiet valley of rock-cut churches and tombs, with few visitors. It lies away from the main villages and is not served by public transport.
Which to pick. Visit with a driver, or add it to a southern tour. It's a good choice if you have already seen Göreme.

Booking tours and tickets in Cappadocia
Is a balloon flight worth the money?
For most people yes, since it is the defining view of the region. Book a reliable operator, expect a possible cancellation for wind, and ask about the refund before paying.
Can I book a balloon on the day?
Rarely. In spring and autumn flights sell out weeks ahead. In winter you may find a seat the night before, but weather cancels more often.
Is there a museum pass for Cappadocia?
The national museum pass covers Göreme and several other state sites in the region. It saves money if you visit three or more, and it skips the ticket line.
Do I need a guide for the valleys?
No. Red Valley, Rose Valley and Pigeon Valley are easy to follow. A guide adds context and helps find the churches that are hard to spot.
Are tours canceled for weather?
Balloons are, often. Walks and drives usually run in rain, although paths can be slippery. Read the cancellation terms before you pay.
What can I leave until I arrive?
Museums, valley walks, an underground city and a driver for the day can be arranged on arrival. Book the balloon flight and any cave hotel first.
