The Matterhorn above the chalets and church of Zermatt village on a sunny winter afternoon

4 days in Zermatt with walking and a trip to Brig

This summer plan uses the extra time for longer walks and a change of scenery down the valley. Keep two days for mountain paths, spend another around Zmutt and the village, then travel to Brig. Move the Brig outing to the cloudiest day, and check seasonal path and lift openings before committing to the walking days.

At a glance

Where to stay
Base yourself in the Village center for straightforward access to both mountain transport and the train to Brig. A room near the station makes the valley day trip easier, especially if you prefer an early departure.

  1. Day 1: Five Lakes Walk from Blauherd

    Morning
Travel via Sunnegga to Blauherd when the lifts and summer trail are open. Start the signed Five Lakes Walk with water, food and a checked weather forecast. Allow three to four hours for the route, plus time for stops.
    Afternoon
Continue toward Sunnegga without rushing the later sections. Reflections depend on wind and visibility, so spend time at a sheltered lake rather than expecting every stop to look the same. Use the lift down once you finish.
    Evening
Keep the evening close to your accommodation after the walk. Take a short turn around the church if your legs allow, then check the forecast for the remaining mountain day.
    Dinner
Choose a village restaurant for dinner and order pasta or rösti after the longer walk.
  2. Day 2: Gornergrat and a measured descent

    Morning
Ride to Gornergrat early and explore the summit viewpoints before returning toward Rotenboden. Visit Riffelsee only on an open walking route, taking care around wet ground and any remaining snow.
    Afternoon
Use the railway to reach Riffelalp for a shorter walk among the trees if conditions allow. Return to the village by train rather than adding a long downhill stretch after yesterday's lake walk.
    Evening
Walk through Hinterdorf and continue to Kirchbrücke before dinner. This is a useful evening for village photographs because the day's mountain excursion does not require a late return.
    Dinner
Have dinner at Whymper-Stube and choose fondue if available, or another Swiss dish from the menu.
  3. Day 3: Zmutt and the older village lanes

    Morning
Follow the signed walking route toward Zmutt in suitable conditions. Make this a slower outing, stopping to look back along the valley rather than trying to reach another lift. Carry a snack in case seasonal restaurants are closed.
    Afternoon
Return with enough time for the Matterhorn Museum and a rest. Check the museum's official opening hours first. If you prefer to remain outside, walk through Steinmatten and along a short section of the Vispa.
    Evening
Choose an early dinner and organize what you need for tomorrow's train journey. Check the return timetable from Brig so you can decide how long to spend in the old town.
    Dinner
Choose a village restaurant serving Valais dishes and order raclette if it is on the menu.
  4. Day 4: Brig and a different valley landscape

    Morning
Take the train down the valley toward Brig, checking whether your chosen service requires a change at Visp. Walk from Brig station toward the old town and Stockalper Palace before deciding how much time to spend indoors.
    Afternoon
Explore the palace grounds where accessible and continue through the old town lanes. Keep an eye on your chosen return connection, especially if you have luggage to collect or an onward journey from Zermatt.
    Evening
Return to Zermatt for dinner if you are staying overnight. If this is your departure day, plan your onward route through Visp in advance so you avoid returning up the valley unnecessarily.
    Dinner
For dinner in Zermatt, choose a simple restaurant near the station and order soup, pasta or a local cheese dish.
Tips

Tips for 4 days in Zermatt

  • This plan assumes summer walking conditions. Replace closed trails with open winter walks or a dedicated ski day.
  • Use Brig as your weather buffer, moving it ahead of a mountain walk if cloud covers the higher slopes.
  • Check trail status separately from lift operation. A working lift does not mean every walking route is open.
  • If leaving after Brig, ask your accommodation about luggage arrangements before planning a direct onward journey.
Questions

4 days in Zermatt with walking and a trip to Brig

Why does this plan include Brig?

Brig adds an old town and palace visit without another high mountain excursion. It also gives you a useful alternative when cloud limits the views above Zermatt.

Can I add Matterhorn Glacier Paradise?

Replace the Zmutt day with Glacier Paradise if you prefer another lift excursion. Keep the afternoon gentle and choose a clear forecast for the summit.

Is the Five Lakes Walk suitable all year?

No. Treat it as a seasonal mountain walk and check official trail conditions and lift operation. Snow can prevent access outside the main walking season.

Do I need to walk down from Gornergrat?

No. The railway lets you visit the summit and return without a long descent. Add intermediate stops only when paths, weather and your energy allow.
