Where to stay around the Vieux-Port

The address matters as much as the harbor view here. Quai du Port puts you below Le Panier, while Quai de Rive Neuve leads toward Saint-Victor. Quai des Belges, at the inland end, gives the shortest approach to the metro. Ask which direction your bedroom faces: a room overlooking an internal courtyard can feel quite different from one above a terrace.

Our verdict

The harbor that is the middle of Marseille: metro, ferries, restaurants and the MuCEM within a short walk. Busy and loud on summer nights.

Good for

  • Easy walking, the metro and the ferries at your door
  • A first visit of two or three nights
  • Families who want shops and cafes close by

Think twice if

  • You sleep lightly: ask for a courtyard or an upper floor
  • You want local restaurants: the quay terraces are for tourists
  • You want the beach: the nearest city beaches need a bus

Eating

Eating in Vieux-Port (the Old Port)

Harbour terraces suit a long lunch, but compare menus before sitting down, particularly for fish dishes sold by weight. Le Miramar is on the northern quay. For a simpler breakfast or sandwich, look along the streets leading inland, where you can collect food before returning to the waterfront.

Getting around

Getting around from Vieux-Port (the Old Port)

Vieux-Port station is on metro line 1, beneath the inland end of the harbor. Walk around the quays when traveling between nearby addresses: reaching a station can take longer than the journey itself. From the western ends, allow extra time to reach the metro.
