Mount Pilatus tickets and route planning
Choose your starting point before buying a Pilatus ticket. Kriens gives access through Krienseregg and Fräkmüntegg, with a change to the summit cable car. Alpnachstad is the cogwheel railway departure point. A circuit needs transport back to Lucerne from the opposite side, so check every connection and the operating status of both mountain routes before committing.

Mount Pilatus tickets and tours
Return via Kriens
Choose this for an ascent and descent on the Kriens side. Check whether your ticket covers the full journey to Pilatus Kulm and which intermediate stops you want.
Return via Alpnachstad
This uses the cogwheel railway in both directions when it is operating. Arrange the journey between Lucerne and Alpnachstad separately unless your chosen product includes it.
Round trip with boat
This combines the lake crossing, cogwheel railway, cable car route and bus connection. It depends on seasonal services, so confirm the included sections and connections on the official Pilatus site.
Round trip with train
Choose a circuit using the train connection to Alpnachstad instead of the boat. Check seasonal availability and whether any mountain reservation must be arranged separately.

The best time to visit
Compare the summit webcam with the forecast before choosing a departure. Leave enough time for your intended descent and onward connection, especially when combining the mountain with a boat journey.
How to get to Mount Pilatus
For Kriens, take bus line 1 from Luzern Bahnhof to Kriens, Zentrum Pilatus, then walk uphill for about 15 minutes. For the railway side, travel to Alpnachstad station; the cogwheel departure is a short signed walk away.
Tips for your visit
- Check operating status for both sides before buying a circuit, since one route may be unavailable.
- Bring a warm layer and shoes with a firm grip, even if conditions beside the lake feel mild.
- Check the final descent for your chosen route before leaving the arrival area at the summit.
Mount Pilatus tickets and route planning
Are the Kriens and Alpnachstad routes interchangeable?
They reach the same summit area but start in different places and use different transport. Your ticket must cover the route you intend to take.
Can I make the full circuit throughout the year?
Do not assume so. The cogwheel railway and boat connections have seasonal schedules, and the lifts can have maintenance closures. Check the official Pilatus site.
Does a transport pass cover the whole trip?
Coverage and reductions depend on your pass and the individual journey sections. Check the official ticket conditions before buying, including any separate reservation requirements.
Do I need to hike to enjoy the summit?
No long hike is required to reach the summit facilities from the mountain stations. Individual viewpoints and paths can involve steps, slopes and exposed conditions.
