Hot air balloons rising over the rock valleys near Göreme at dawn

Where to stay in Cappadocia

Cappadocia is not a city but a region of villages and small towns spread across a plateau of soft volcanic rock, and the town you sleep in decides your trip. Göreme is the easiest base: the most hotels, the most restaurants, the Open-Air Museum nearby, and the balloons overhead at dawn. Uçhisar has the best views and quieter evenings, and Ürgüp is a real town with the better restaurants and wine. The thing to think twice about is the distance: the villages are 5 to 15 minutes apart by road, so no one base is walkable to everything, and a car or a driver matters more than the hotel.

The short answer

First trip
The easiest base is Göreme: hotels, restaurants and the valleys all close.
Couples
A cave room with a terrace in Uçhisar, or in Göreme above the main street.
Families
Ürgüp for a real town with shops, or Göreme for an easy base without a car.
Tight budget
Nevşehir for the lowest prices, or Avanos for a calm river town.
Quiet
Çavuşin, Ortahisar or Mustafapaşa, each with a car.

How we judge an area of Cappadocia: how far it is from the main sights by road, noise at night, how easy it is without a car, and price. Nothing on this page is paid for, and the hotels we choose will say who chose them and when they last stayed.

Cappadocia's towns are far apart for walking, so the walking times show distance, not a suggestion to walk between villages. Within Göreme, Uçhisar and Çavuşin you can walk to dinner, but you will need a taxi, a bus or a car for the valleys and the other villages. Walking times are the straight line between two points plus a third for real streets, at an easy pace, rounded to five minutes. They are measured from the middle of each area, so a hotel at its edge will be a few minutes either way. Streets in the cave villages are steep. Price is our read of a standard double in the same week, from € (cheapest) to €€€€ (dearest), until booking-site prices replace it.

1 of 8 · Best for a first visit

Göreme, for the easiest base

The most visited village in the region, with the most cave hotels and restaurants, and the Open-Air Museum a short ride away. Busy, and a little loud.

Göreme is a village built into the rock, with cave hotels climbing the hillsides, restaurants on terraces, tour offices on the main street and a bus station. It has the widest choice of rooms in every price range, and the Open-Air Museum, Red Valley, Rose Valley and Pigeon Valley are all within a few kilometers, so a day or two can be done without a car. At dawn you can watch the balloons rise from your own terrace.

The price of being the easiest base is the crowd. The main street is busy by day and by evening, and quad bikes, tour minibuses and music bars add noise. Burners from the balloons can be heard from the early morning, and the call to prayer carries across the rooftops. The hillside streets are steep and cobbled, so ask the hotel how many steps lead up to your room.

Good for

  • A first visit, with the most hotels and restaurants
  • Reaching the valleys and the Open-Air Museum without a car
  • Watching the balloons from your terrace

Think twice if

  • You want silence at dawn or at night in the center
  • Steps and steep streets are hard for you, or you travel with heavy luggage
  • You want a real town with shops and markets: this is a visitor village

Staying in Göreme: nearby sights, food and getting around

2 of 8 · Best for views and quiet evenings

Uçhisar, for the views

A hillside village under a rock fortress, with the widest views in the region. Quieter than Göreme, and steeper.

Uçhisar rises up a steep hill to its castle, the tallest rock in the area, and the view from the top takes in most of the region. The hotels here are often on the upper slopes, with terraces looking over the valleys, and the evenings are quieter than in Göreme. Pigeon Valley starts at the village and runs down toward Göreme, so a morning walk is easy.

The catch is the hill. Streets are steep, some hotels are reached by long stairways, and the nearest restaurants may be a climb from your door. The village has fewer places to eat than Göreme, and the walk or taxi ride to Göreme takes around fifteen to thirty minutes. A late night out means a taxi back.

Good for

  • Wide views from a hotel terrace
  • Quieter evenings than Göreme
  • Starting the Pigeon Valley walk at your door

Think twice if

  • You find hills and stairs hard
  • You want a choice of restaurants within a short walk
  • You want to walk to the Open-Air Museum

Staying in Uçhisar: nearby sights, food and getting around

3 of 8 · Best for restaurants and a real town

Ürgüp, for restaurants and wine

A small town with shops, wine bars and several of the region's best restaurants, about fifteen minutes from Göreme by car.

Ürgüp is a working town with a weekly market, a main street of shops, wine bars and several of the region's best-regarded restaurants, including its Michelin-starred table, in the old Kayakapı quarter. Hotels range from large modern places to restored stone houses and cave rooms, and prices are often slightly lower than in Göreme.

It is not a village, and it is not walkable to the main sights: Göreme and the Open-Air Museum are about fifteen minutes by road, and the valleys further. You will use taxis, the minibus or a hire car. The town has more traffic than the villages, though nights are calmer than in Göreme's center.

Good for

  • A choice of good restaurants and wine bars
  • A town with shops, a market and a pharmacy
  • A base with a car for Soğanlı and Mustafapaşa

Think twice if

  • You want to walk to the balloons and the valleys
  • You want cave hotel atmosphere on every street: it is a more ordinary town

Staying in Ürgüp: nearby sights, food and getting around

4 of 8 · Best for a quiet village

Ortahisar, for a quiet village

A small village between Göreme and Ürgüp under its own rock fortress, with few visitors and a handful of hotels.

Ortahisar sits between Göreme and Ürgüp, around a rock fortress that has been cut into rooms, and it has far fewer visitors than either. It has a handful of small hotels and guesthouses, a few cafes and restaurants, and a quiet daily life. Göreme is about ten minutes away by car or taxi.

There is not much to do in the village beyond the castle and the lanes, and you will eat out in Göreme or Ürgüp more often than not. Without a car, evenings are limited by how late the last minibus runs, so check the times when you arrive.

Good for

  • Quiet and few crowds
  • Between Göreme and Ürgüp for a car trip
  • Small, family-run places

Think twice if

  • You want a choice of restaurants or nightlife in the village
  • You depend on public transport after dark

Staying in Ortahisar: nearby sights, food and getting around

5 of 8 · Best for a river town and pottery

Avanos, for pottery and lower prices

A working river town known for its red clay pottery, about ten minutes north of Göreme. Fewer cave hotels, and lower prices.

Avanos lies on the Kızılırmak river and has made pottery from the river's red clay for generations. The old center has potters' workshops, a Friday market, riverside cafes and a few guesthouses. The town has a local feel that Göreme has lost, and prices are lower.

It has fewer cave hotels and less view than the villages, and the sights, the valleys and the balloons are a drive away. Evening choices are plainer: kebab houses and pide places on the main streets rather than terraces. It suits a second night or a budget-minded trip with a car.

Good for

  • Pottery workshops and a Friday market
  • Lower prices than Göreme
  • A town with everyday shops and cafes

Think twice if

  • You want a cave hotel with a valley view
  • You want to walk to the sights and valleys

Staying in Avanos: nearby sights, food and getting around

6 of 8 · Best for walking and calm

Çavuşin, for calm and the Red Valley

A small village with an old cave village above it and the Red Valley and Rose Valley paths close by. Few hotels, and few crowds.

Çavuşin lies on the road between Göreme and Avanos, with an abandoned cave village on the cliff above and the Rose Valley and Red Valley paths on its doorstep. It has a handful of small hotels, a few cafes and a peaceful feel once the day-trippers have left.

It is small, and not much happens after dinner. You are about ten minutes from Göreme and Avanos by road, and the minibus is infrequent, so a car or a taxi helps. It suits walkers and people who want the valleys at their door.

Good for

  • Walking the Red Valley and Rose Valley from your hotel
  • Quiet evenings and a village feel
  • A short drive from Göreme and Avanos

Think twice if

  • You want a choice of restaurants
  • You want to go out at night without a car

Staying in Çavuşin: nearby sights, food and getting around

7 of 8 · Best for old stone houses

Mustafapaşa, for old stone houses

A quiet village of 19th-century Greek stone houses south of Ürgüp, with a handful of boutique hotels and few visitors.

Mustafapaşa, once a Greek village known as Sinasos, has stone mansions with carved doorways and courtyards, a few small hotels in restored houses and almost no crowds. It is about ten minutes south of Ürgüp, and the Old Greek House restaurant is here.

It is a place to sit still in. Evening options are a few restaurants, and you need a car or a taxi to reach Göreme, around thirty minutes away. Hotels are fewer, so book early.

Good for

  • Restored stone houses in a village with little traffic
  • A quiet base for a car trip around the south
  • Couples and slow stays

Think twice if

  • You want to go out in the evening, or be near the balloons
  • You do not have a car: it is a long way from the main sights

Staying in Mustafapaşa: nearby sights, food and getting around

8 of 8 · Best for the lowest prices

Nevşehir, for the lowest prices

The provincial capital, with business hotels and bus connections, about twenty minutes from Göreme. Cheap and practical, with no cave atmosphere.

Nevşehir is the biggest town in the region, with shops, a large market, a bus terminal and chain-style hotels. Prices are the lowest in the area, and it is the transport hub for buses from Istanbul, Ankara and elsewhere.

It is a modern town, not a cave village, and the sights are a taxi or minibus ride away. It makes sense for a night at either end of a trip, or if cost matters more than atmosphere. It is also close to the underground cities to the south.

Good for

  • The lowest prices
  • Bus connections and everyday shops
  • Close to the underground cities

Think twice if

  • You want cave hotels and valley views
  • You want to be close to the balloons and the Open-Air Museum

Before you book

Before you book a room in Cappadocia

The practical things that decide whether a good hotel in Cappadocia makes a good stay.

  • The accommodation taxTurkey charges an accommodation tax of 1 percent of the room price, temporarily cut from 2 percent from 1 May 2026 until 31 December 2026. It applies to hotels, guesthouses and similar places, and is added to the bill by the hotel. From 1 January 2027 the rate is due to return to 2 percent unless it is extended, so check the date of your stay.
  • From Nevşehir Kapadokya airportThe airport is about 40 kilometers from Göreme, and a transfer takes around 40 to 50 minutes. Shuttles run to flight times and stop at Göreme, Ürgüp and Avanos, in 50 to 70 minutes depending on stops, and taxis and private transfers are the faster option. Fares change, so check the current price before you travel.
  • From Kayseri airportKayseri is about 75 kilometers from Göreme, and a transfer takes 60 to 75 minutes. There is no direct public bus to the villages: the budget route takes three separate legs and about three hours. A shared shuttle needs booking ahead, and a private car or taxi is quicker.
  • Balloon pick-upMost balloon operators collect guests from the hotel before dawn, from the main villages. Check that your hotel is on the operator's list, and plan to be up around 4 or 5am.
  • Getting aroundMinibuses link Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp, Avanos and Nevşehir but run less in the evening. Taxis are easy in Göreme. For the valleys and day trips, a hire car or a driver for the day is easiest.
  • Heat and coldSummer is hot, and winter is cold with snow in many years. Rock rooms hold the temperature, but check heating, hot water and a working window before you book.
  • Steps and cobblesMany cave hotels have steps, uneven stone and no lift. If stairs are hard for you, check the room's floor and ask how close a car can come.
