Things to do in Cappadocia: balloons, valleys and cave churches

Cappadocia is a region of soft volcanic rock in central Turkey, carved over centuries into churches, houses and whole underground towns. It is spread across a dozen villages, so plan on a few days, early starts and a car or a driver. The one thing to book before anything else is the balloon flight, which depends on the wind.

The short answer

The full guide to where to stay in Cappadocia
  • Göreme

the easiest base, with the most choice

A village of cave hotels, cafes and tour offices, with the Open-Air Museum and several valleys within reach. It is the most visited place in the region, so the center is busy and the quad bikes are loud.

  • Uçhisar

    views and a quieter evening

A hillside village under a rock fortress, with wide views over the valleys. Streets are steep and the walk to the nearest restaurants can be a climb.

  • Ürgüp

restaurants, wine and a real town

A small town with a market, wine bars and many of the region's best tables. It is about 15 minutes from Göreme, so you will want a car or a taxi for the sights.

  • Avanos

    pottery and a river town

A working town on the Kızılırmak river, known for its red clay pottery. It is a calmer, cheaper base with fewer cave hotels, about 10 minutes from Göreme.

Things to do

Things to do in Cappadocia

Start early. The best light, the thinnest crowds and the coolest air are all before 9am.
  1. Hot air balloon flight at dawn

Dozens of balloons rise at sunrise over the valleys near Göreme and Uçhisar, and a flight usually lasts about an hour. Flights are canceled when the wind or weather is not right, so keep your first morning free. Choose a licensed operator and follow the crew's instructions.

2 to 4 weeks ahead, longer in spring and autumn

  2. Göreme Open-Air Museum

A group of rock-cut monasteries and churches with painted walls, part of the Göreme National Park and Rock Sites of Cappadocia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Go at opening time, before the tour buses. One church may need a separate ticket, so check at the gate.

  3. Red Valley and Rose Valley at sunset

A walking route between Göreme and Çavuşin through pink and red rock, with cave churches along the way. Sunset is popular, so walk it earlier in the day if you want the paths quiet.

  4. Pigeon Valley, Göreme to Uçhisar

A downhill walk of a couple of hours through a valley with pigeon houses cut into the rock, ending under Uçhisar castle. Wear shoes with grip and take water, as there is little shade.

  5. Uçhisar Castle

A tall rock fortress honeycombed with rooms, with a climb to the top and a view over the whole region. Go at the end of the day, when the light is low.

  6. Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı underground city

Tunnels and rooms cut down through the rock over many levels, used for shelter in past centuries. Passages are low and narrow, and the city is cool and damp, so it is not for anyone who dislikes tight spaces.

  7. Zelve Open-Air Museum

A valley of abandoned cave dwellings and chapels, with ladders and passages you can explore. It is less visited than Göreme and a good place to walk without a crowd.

  8. Pottery at Avanos

Avanos has made pottery from the river's red clay for generations. Visit a workshop to watch a potter at the wheel, and buy directly from the maker rather than from a tour stop.

  9. Çavuşin old village

A ruined cave village on a cliff above the modern village, with a church whose paintings can still be seen. It is a short, steep climb and an easy stop between Göreme and Avanos.

  10. Ortahisar Castle and Ürgüp wine tasting

Ortahisar's rock fortress is quieter than Uçhisar's. In the evening, Ürgüp has wine bars serving the region's local grapes.

Places are limited and flights are canceled on windy mornings, so leave at least one spare day.

2 to 4 weeks ahead, longer in April to June and September to October
  2. A cave hotel for your first night

The best rooms with terraces over the valley go first, and many small hotels have only a handful of rooms.

a month ahead in spring and autumn
  3. A driver or a hire car

Public buses link the main towns, but the valleys, the underground cities and Ihlara are far easier with your own transport.

When to go

Best time to visit Cappadocia

April to June and September to October are the best months: days are warm, mornings are cool, and balloons fly on most days. Spring brings green fields and wild flowers, and autumn brings harvest color in the vineyards. These are also the busiest months, so book early.

July and August are hot and dry, and you should plan the day around early starts. Winter is cold, with snow in many years and frozen mornings, and balloon flights are canceled more often. Prices fall, the crowds thin out, and a heated cave room under snow is a good place to be. Check that your hotel has proper heating.

Questions

Cappadocia: questions people ask

How many days do you need in Cappadocia?

Three nights covers the main sights, a balloon flight and a spare morning. Two nights is enough for a short break if you are happy to rush. Four or five suit slow walking, day trips to Ihlara and a rest day.

Is a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia worth it?

For most people it is the reason to come. Flights are at sunrise and last about an hour. They are often canceled for wind, so book early in your stay, keep a spare morning, and choose a licensed operator.

What is the best time to visit Cappadocia?

April to June and September to October. The weather is mild, and balloons fly on most mornings. Summer is hot and winter is cold, with snow in many years.

Do you need a car in Cappadocia?

It helps. The villages are close together, but the valleys, underground cities and day trips are much easier with a car or a driver. Taxis are available in Göreme, and local minibuses link the main towns.

Can you visit Cappadocia in one day?

Not well. Even a flight from Istanbul and back leaves little time, and a balloon flight starts before dawn. Two nights is a sensible minimum.

How do you get from Istanbul to Cappadocia?

Fly to Nevşehir or Kayseri, about 1 hour 30 minutes, and take a shuttle or taxi. A night bus is cheaper and takes around 10 to 12 hours.

Visitors generally find the region calm and easy. Take the usual care with bags in busy places, follow the rules at balloon and quad operators, and check your government's current travel advice before you go.

Is Cappadocia a good place for children?

Yes for walking and exploring, with caveats. The valley paths are steep and shaded, the underground cities are tight, and balloon operators may set a minimum age, so ask before booking.
